Casualty viewers in tears over Elle Gardner’s heartbreaking final scenes

Casualty viewers were left in tears last night as Elle Gardner (played by Jaye Griffith) decided to turn her back on Holby forever.

Before waving goodbye, Elle attempted to reach out to her colleague and friend Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing) after noticing she was suffering from anxiety after her recent attack at the hands of a patient’s husband who blamed Connie for his wife’s death.

But things didn’t go as smoothly as Elle had hoped.

Instead, Connie refused to accept anything was wrong and the pair had a heated discussion.

However, that didn’t stop Elle, who waited until she had finished her last shift to try and reach out to Connie again, this time giving her the name of a therapist.

Elle’s exit has been in the pipeline for the last few weeks after she landed an impressive new job elsewhere and handed in her notice.

Although, it seemed as though she was now having doubts about taking the new job after learning through Hanssen that her new role had actually been engineered by Connie.

Speaking to Connie, she explained: “I’m not taking the job, and I am not staying either.

“Connie I can’t do this anymore, I tried really hard to be your friend, but you didn’t really try to be mine, did you?”

She added: “I don’t know what’s going on with you but I think you need proper help”, before giving her the number of a therapist.

Connie remained silent for the entire interaction, leaving Elle visibly upset.

But, as she watched her pal leave, Connie quickly rushed to catch her and cried out: “Elle!” but she couldn’t hear her.

Viewers took to Twitter to reveal their sadness over the heartbreaking scene.

One user wrote: “The pain in Connie’s voice when she shouted Elle and Ellen didn’t hear! #Casualty” added another.

A second chimed: “Awwww why did Elle have to leave!! She was one of my faves.”

While a third person added: “Oh my God, the end scene made me cry!”

Casualty continues on Saturday at 9.10pm on BBC One.
