Richie Sambora has revealed that he made the difficult decision to leave Bon Jovi seven years ago because he had a lot of work to do around his personal life.
“It wasn’t a popular decision by any means, obviously, but there was really almost no choice about it. I had a lot of conscious work to do around [my personal life],” Sambora said in an interview with People.
“We’ve been through a lot of things together. That was a time of psychological maintenance for the family. You know, I ain’t no angel. But I realized, Ava needed me to be around at that point in time. Family had to come first, and that’s what happened,” the former lead guitarist of Bon Jovi added, referring to his daughter, who was 16 years old when he left the band in 2013.
Sambora said he always had a very open, conversational relationship with Ava, who was born from his marriage with actress Heather Locklear. The couple divorced in 2007.
