Best facial oils to give you glowing, plump and hydrated skin

If you ask most experts, they’d probably make a case for an oil being an essential part of your skincare regime.

They’re packed with skin-loving ingredients that have the ability to turn dull, dry skin to soft and glowing almost overnight. Plus, when used with some facial massaging techniques, they can even keep wrinkles at bay and improve skin texture and firmness over time.

There are plenty on the market but we had our expert OK! beauty testing panel put these six new ones to the test to see which ones really worked for their particular skincare concern…

Best for: anti-ageing

Bharti Vyas Special Oil, buy it here for £35

A repairing formula with rosehip for anti-ageing, argan oil for fighting inflammation, and neroli oil for softening fine lines and any skin scarring.

Tester Mauva says: ‘ I’ve always used oils (it’s my secret to looking young at 60!) and this is a good one. I liked how light this felt on my skin, as well as how soft it made it feel. Very nourishing on dry areas like my cheeks.’

Best for: radiance

Mal & Mod Active Recovery Oil, buy it here for £54

  • Best hand creams to repair dry and sore skin from harsh sanitiser gels and soaps

An omega-rich oil that rejuvenates, balances and boosts cellular repair. Best for an overnight treatment.

Tester Aysha says: ‘The smell isn’t great, but that doesn’t last long. A few drops went a long way, and I even had a little left to rub on my neck and hands after. I used it morning and night and after a few days my skin looked dewier and more glowy.’

Best for: smoothing skin texture

The White Company Overnight Renewal Treatment Oil, buy it here for £30

This combines antioxidants with poppy flower extract and skin-nourishing oils to hydrate, smooth and reduce bumpy texture.

Tester Lauren says : ‘I noticed the lovely spa-like smell first. The oil absorbed easily into the skin and wasn’t greasy. It’s definitely helped my skin to feel firmer, more radiant and look smoother.’

Best for: reducing redness

Beuti Skincare Beauty Sleep Elixir, buy it here for £47

Made with 14 plant-based anti-inflammatory oils, this is meant to reduce redness while you sleep, as well as hydrate.

Tester Pandora says: ‘I got a small initial break-out of spots from this, but after a week my skin got used to it and felt calmer, smoother and less red. It is a nighttime one as it doesn’t sit well under makeup. A very soothing smell, too.’

Best for: total transforming

Givenchy L’Intemporel Firmness Boosting Oil, buy it here for £100.50

A splurge, but it promises to provide instant lifting action while melting into the skin to give a smooth, supple and seriously glowy effect.

Tester Michelle says: ‘I’m new to using oils and I was amazed how this transformed my complexion. I have flaky skin on my forehead and this helped with that but also balanced out my shiny cheeks and chin. Works perfectly as a primer in the day as well.’

Best for: serious nourishing

Nivea Q10 Power 60+ Anti-Age Multi-Action Pampering Oil, buy it here for £19.99

Made for more mature skin that needs extra nourishment, this claims to also reduce wrinkles in four weeks and firm skin in two.

Tester Flavia says: ‘This smells divine, like a luxury perfume/old-school suntan oil, and went on beautifully. Not greasy at all. I applied under my normal moisturiser, but I would also put it on throughout the day to brighten my skin, like a little skin-glow pick-me-up. It made my skin feel soft and pampered.’

Ask the expert: why should I be using an oil?

*They can be more effective than a moisturiser: ‘The molecular weight of oils is quite low, so when combined with massage, the blood vessels dilate and the oil absorbs much faster into the skin,’ says celebrity facialist Bharti Vyas.

*You can use oils day and night – and under your moisturiser if you need the extra hydration. ‘I recommend an oil-based cleanser in the morning, as this helps to balance the skin, then a facial oil as a moisturiser at night after cleansing,’ advises Bharti. ‘Since the body repairs at night, the ingredients will aid with this.’

*‘I love oils like rosehip, jojoba, coconut and almond for their lightness and quick absorption. Oils like wheat germ and grapeseed are heavier, but excellent for dry and dehydrated skin,’ Bharti says.
