Whether it’s to live a healthier lifestyle, learn a new skill or ditch our bad habits, lots of us will be making new year’s resolutions tomorrow.
Although these promises are easy to make to ourselves, sticking to our guns is difficult, which is why some of us end up making the same resolutions year after year.
Meghan Markle was no exception, as she wrote on The Tig in January 2016 about how she had been vowing to make the same changes every year to no avail – but then suddenly changed tack.
"Run a marathon. Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French. These make my New Year’s resolution list nearly (AKA actually every) single year," the then-34-year-old wrote.
"The marathon hasn’t happened. The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple drinks," she added.
"Then there’s the French – a language I studied through high school and then lost as I immersed myself in speaking Spanish with the Argentinians during my stint in Buenos Aires.
"I have put my little Rosetta Stone headset in my eager ears every year, resolving to do interviews en français, but much to my chagrin, it hasn’t stuck."
"And when it comes to the biting of the nails – well, it still happens with a turbulent flight or a stressful day. It’s unladylike. But then again, so is the swearing. Dammit.
So she decided to change her approach: "This year, I resolve not to have a resolution.
"For this new year, the only thing I aim to do is to approach life playfully. To laugh and enjoy, to keep my standards high but my level of self-acceptance higher.
"My New Year’s resolution is to leave room for magic. To make my plans, and be okay if they sometimes break. To set my goals, but to be open to change."
It was mid way through 2016 when Meghan was introduced to Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.
Meeting a total stranger definitely shows an openness to change, and although we don’t know for certain how the couple feel about their relationship many would say that their royal romance seems pretty magical – so perhaps Meghan succeeded with that resolution.
2019 will be a big year for the Duchess, who is expecting her first child in the Spring, is set to move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, and is yet to receive her royal patronages.
