Next and Matalan recall children's Christmas clothes over choking fears

Christmas clothing and cat and mouse hat sets are among the potential gifts to be pulled off the shelves.

Santa and Rudolph-themed hoodies are among those items being withdrawn due to safety fears.

The Want That Trend Mummy and Me Deluxe Christmas Santa Zip HoodySanta hoodie was recalled due to a "potential problem with the attachment of the pom poms on the body, which if detached could be a choking hazard".

While the Rudolph hoodie off its shelves too after concerns the horns were "too long" and could be an "entrapment".

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) urged customers to seek a refund, saying: "Unfortunately, it's come to light that there's a potential problem with the length of the horns on the hood which could be an entrapment issue if caught."

Next's Christmas pudding onesie has also been recalled after the length of the pudding leaves on the hood were said to be too long and could be an "entrapment issue".

While the retailer's Want That Trend White Unicorn Star Onesie and Want That Trend Unicorn Multi Onesie were also taken off the shelves for the same potential entrapment issue.

The horns on the unicorn onesie could cause safety issues if children were to get caught, CTSI said.

A spokesewoman for Next said: "The small quantity of items affected by these recalls are from a 3rd party brand ‘Want that trend’ sold on the Next website.

"As a 3rd party brand the responsibility for quality and safety lies with ‘Want that trend’.

"Having reviewed the product Next has taken the precaution to recall it and subsequently we have notified all customers who have purchased this item. "

She added: "We would like to assure you that similar Next branded children’s garments are not affected and do not need to be returned. We are sorry for any confusion this may have caused."

Affected Next customers can return the recalled product for a full refund to their nearest store or call 0333 777 8185 to arrange a collection.

Matalan has also recalled a number of products ahead of the Christmas rush.

The kids' cat and mouse trapper set was withdrawn over fears it could cause a choking hazard for children.

Adults have been urged not to let their kids wear the products, suited to children aged between six months and four years.

The Kids 3D Mouse Trapper Hat and Mittens Set, also for kids between 6 months and 4 years, likewise posed a potential choking hazard for young children and was recalled.

The Sun Online has contacted Matalan for a comment.

A statement on its website about the products reads: "Unfortunately, we have become aware that the detailing may pose a choking hazard for young children.

"Due to the seriousness of this safety issue we are recalling these products, as our customers' health and safety is extremely important to us."
