‘Scrounger’ mum boasts about Disney trip after raising £7k from strangers

A mum branded a "scrounger" after asking strangers to fund her family’s trip to Disney World has boasted about the "dream" holiday after raising £7,000 on GoFundMe.

NHS worker Nikki Smith sparked outrage with her campaign – and she’s now posted Facebook snaps of her recent Orlando theme park getaway with her two young daughters.

One photo shows the the Bristol mum – clad in a Mickey Mouse shirt – posing with her girls, while others show her daughters in front of Cinderella’s Castle.

Nikki also posted a video of a fireworks show and wrote that she was "feeling thankful".

The mum had initially scrapped her GoFundMe appeal – which was shared more than 18,000 times on Facebook – after she faced abuse.

She asked for donations so she could take her girls to Disney World.

Her appeal sparked a backlash, with critics on social media calling her a "scrounger" and saying she should pay for the family’s holiday with her own money.

But weeks later, hospital worker Nikki set up a new page and issued a defiant message to "hurtful and cruel" online trolls, saying she was "not a bad person" and wouldn’t be "bullied" into removing it.

The GoFundMe page is still active and it has more than £7,300 in donations as of Wednesday.

Nikki wrote on the page recently, thanking everyone who donated.

She wrote: "To all of the wonderful kind people who donated to my campaign, I wanted you to know we made it to disneyworld!

"We have been back a few days and the memories we have made will fill us with smiles and happiness for all time.

"What an adventure, you have blessed my daughters lives with your kindness and every single one of you who helped make my girls dreams come true, I owe you everything.

"Thankyou from the bottom of my heart .

"You have made our happily ever after."

On the GoFundMe Page, Nikki hit back at critics and said she was a carer who was on a zero hours contract and wasn’t able to get additional shifts at work.

She wrote that she "was only thinking of my children and making them happy", and she was left "traumatised" by the abuse.

She added: "I haven’t hurt anyone. I was only trying to fulfill my children’s dreams. Thank you to all who have been so kind to me."

Mirror Online has contacted Nikki for comment.
