'Big Sky': This Character Is Closer To the Abductions Than They Might First Appear

ABC’s new series Big Sky finally premiered, and it left viewers utterly shocked and unsure where things go from here. One character’s action led to a shocking conclusion of the episode. This character appears to be a pillar of the community to some, but he really has a hand in the abductions going on.

A major death occurs in the premiere at the hands of Rick Legarski

Fans are first introduced to a number of important characters, including Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe), a private investigator, and his ex-cop estranged wife, Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick). Cody has a private investigator partner, Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), who he’s been sleeping with as well, leading to some major drama.

Cody and Jenny have a son named Justin (Gage Marsh), who calls them in the premiere episode to inform them that his girlfriend, Danielle (Natalie Alyn Lind), has gone missing with her sister, Grace (Jade Pettyjohn). They were kidnapped on a rural road in Montana by Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty), a truck driver, but that part isn’t known yet. However, Ronald isn’t working alone, which soon becomes apparent.

Cody goes out searching for the missing girls, and teams up with a state trooper named Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch). The secretary of his private investigator’s office, Denise (Dedee Pfeiffer), pairs the two up as her cousin was once married to Rick.

When Cody meets up with Rick, he learns from his wife that 12 women have gone missing in the area, and most were last seen at truck stops. “There’s a faction of truckers mixed up in sex trafficking,” Cody adds.

Cody and Rick plan to head to a local church to look at the attendee list for long-haul truckers. But Rick is involved with the abductions, and when Cody gets too close, Rick shoots him and kills him.

Rick is involved in the abductions and sex trafficking

In episode 2, Rick oversees Ronald disposing of Cody and Danielle’s vehicles by burying them, presumably with Cody’s body still in the truck. The two talk at the same bar where Cody was killed, and discuss the situation.

Apparently, Rick chose Ronald specifically for the abductions, which is quite shocking considering he’s a state trooper and putting on a major front. “The irony here, I hand-picked you in part because of your good judgement,” Rick says to Ronald. “This, was not good judgement Ronald.”

“Can we talk about yours?” Ronald asks, referring to Rick killing Cody.

This is when it becomes obvious that they’re involved in a sex trafficking ring. “The idea is we take girls who won’t be missed,” Rick tells him. “Dirty girls, the kind of gummy scummy we scrape off the bottom of our boots. But you took two wholesome teenagers, the type friends and family go looking for. That’s what brought Cody Hoyt to me Ronald.”

“Kidnapping doesn’t always go easy peasy,” Ronald replies.

Rick goes on to reveal his motives for killing Cody. “Mr. Hoyt had already tumbled to the idea that a long-haul trucker might be responsible,” Rick says. “That’s why I had to deal with him. I had to clean up a mess you made.”

Although Rick may appear to be just an ordinary state trooper, it turns out he’s involved in the abductions, and he’s also involved in a sex trafficking ring.

Rick spends the majority of episode 2 trying to dodge the situation and keep his evil deeds under wraps. He tells Cassie that he didn’t go out with Cody to search for the girls, but that Cody left to continue the search on his own. However, Cassie is more than suspicious of him from the start. Hopefully, she discovers what happened to Cody soon and how Rick is involved in everything.
