While some soap stars can’t wait to get their hands on action scenes or stunts, Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has confessed that she would much rather have pages of dialogue to work with – and is especially not keen if the scene involves guns.
It comes as her alter ego faces death at the hands of shooter Scott Emberton (Tom Roberts) during a showdown in the Rovers as he tries to get her to stop Johnny (Richard Hawley) from reporting him to the police.
Sally Ann exclaimed to Metro.co.uk: ‘She’s terrified, in reality, you’d be cacking yourself. I don’t like guns. Even though it was a replica, I just don’t even like anyone gesturing guns with their fingers.’
Reflecting on how COVID-19 restrictions has meant more dialogue rather than action, the actress went on: ‘It brings something different, you just have to be more creative. If we didn’t have this, you’d just fall back on what you know works.
‘Now we can’t so we have to find different ways of playing these scenes. I think it’s great, I’m enjoying it. We’ve had longer scenes which are more character driven. I hate stunts and action– don’t make me run or shoot someone or that palaver. I prefer 10 pages of dialogue so I’m in heaven.’
However, one thing the restrictions have meant is less socialising and hugging with her Corrie family, which Sally Ann finds a bit more difficult.
She shared: ‘We see less of each other – we all miss our canteen table. People you don’t work with, we all would come together. We don’t have that now – when Jenny and Johnny do all of their scenes on one day which is great, it’s rewarding. But as a result, you see no-one else.
‘A lot more Zoom calls but we’re all coping – I was really thrilled to see Barbara Knox back. I saw her at the top of the stairs and we had a 2 metre virtual hug.
‘I told her so many people were asking about her on Twitter and she was surprised. “Are there strangers asking about me?” She was thrilled. There are people I haven’t seen in so long.’
