EastEnders and Coronation Street set for rare New Year clash

The festive season won’t be entirely jolly for fans of EastEnders and Coronation Street because the BBC and ITV are intent on forcing you to make a very tough decision.

The full soap schedules for the festive period were unveiled on Tuesday (December 4) — check out our full overview by clicking here — and while there’s so much to look forward to, there’s going to be a rare clash on New Year’s Day.

ITV and the Beeb have chosen to schedule EastEnders and Coronation Street to go head-to-head in a battle of festive ratings supremacy with hour-long episodes at 8pm.

While ITV has been known to put Emmerdale against EastEnders often throughout the year, it’s extremely rare (but not unheard of) for Weatherfield and Walford to be clashing directly.

As fans know, New Year’s Day is typically one of the most action-packed episodes of the year in Albert Square — think back to Mick Carter getting shot in the botched heist last year, or Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell plummeting to their deaths the year before.

EastEnders has another extremely eventful run of episodes coming up over the holiday season, as tensions in the Slater family reach a boiling point and the Taylors get a return visit from S Club 7’s Hannah Spearritt.

Coronation Street looks set to give EastEnders a run for its money over the festive period as well, with Liz McDonald being targeted in a hit-and-run and Jenny Connor’s shock collapse.

Which soap will win the ratings battle on New Year’s Day? We’ll find out soon enough…
