John Barrowman has taken third place on I’m A Celebrity 2018 – then burst into tears at the start of his exit interview.
The Doctor Who star failed beat former football manager Harry Redknapp and Inbetweeners actress Emily Atack but was celebrating a ‘fabulous’ bronze medal tonight.
Viewers voted for John in their millions after watching him complete a disgusting eating trial Bushtucker Bonanza in the final, but it wasn’t enough to win.
When asked why he was crying, John said: "It’s a bit of relief and excitement – I can’t believe how many people voted for me."
He also spoke about his special relationship with Emily, who he confirmed would be joining him at his American home.
He said being on the show had been one of the best things he had ever done and that it had taught him a lot about himself.
John also said he wanted Redknapp to win although he and Atack had formed a special friendship.
"As soon as I met Emily I knew that we would be lifelong friends," he said. "And we will."
He was reunited with husband Scott Gill on the bridge and now plans to use his new found skills for a jungle-style adventure.
Stage and screen star John, 51, said: “We’ve already talked about buying a camper van when I saw Scott the other day in the jungle. I don’t think I will be going in a tent or sleeping outdoors but I might be in a big camp camper, fabulous!
“I have learned in here how to use your fear and make your fear your strength and live every day in the moment.
“And the first things I will do now are hug Scott, kiss Scott, have something to eat and then take my my mum and dad shopping.”
It’s thought the actor’s army of supporters in the US and beyond have found ways to watch and vote on the show illegally.
John’s husband Scott had encouraged them when he said: “They could tip it in his favour if they can get in there and vote. They just need to take a certain approach to the internet shall we say? Then they can get in there and vote and all sorts of things.”
Fans also voted for him as he bravely continued when he sprained his ankle and even continued with trials.
A week ago he returned to the I’m A Celebrity camp less than 24 hours after the ankle injury threatened to ruin his chances of being crowned King of the jungle.
He was rushed to hospital after he slipped down a path when walking to clean a pot and immediately screamed out in pain.
The former Doctor Who star was left in agony and was helped into the medical hut by DIY SOS host Nick Knowles and Hollyoaks star Malique Thompson-Dwyer.
He spent overnight in a hospital but X-rays showed there was no break and it was just a severe sprain.
He said at the time “I am not a quitter, I want to walk across that bridge and I want the goddam fireworks.”
He also had one of the most memorable conversations in camp when he and Harry spoke about how they met their partners in episode three.
Whilst Harry spoke of meeting wife Sandra in a dance above the Two Puddings pub, John’s story was much more unlikely.
He said: “I was in Sunset Boulevard at the time and I invited Scott to come and see me and we’d then go out for a meal. Well that night we were meant to go out I get a call from someone who said they had Cher on the line. She’d seen the show the night before and wanted to take me out for dinner. I said ‘that’s amazing, but I can’t go’. I spoke to Cher and told her why and she said no one had ever turned her down before so bring Scott along. So our first date was with Cher.”
After some time in Australia with his parents and partner, John and husband Scott are planning a jungle themed Christmas.
John’s husband Scott said a few days ago in a letter to him: “I am so looking forward to Xmas when we can snuggle up with the dogs again in a nice big comfortable bed – and watch your ‘I’m a Celebrity’ exploits all over again together.”
Before going on the show, John had also joked he wanted to be the first of a new kind of gender fluid winner on the show.
“I would be over the moon if I won,” he said.
“I want to be King and Queen of the jungle and cross the gender lines.
“I am just making a joke but I am a very big supporter of LGBTQ rights around the world and I talk like that because I feel it’s better that we normalise everything rather make everybody feel different – I am a gay man, I identify as a gay man and I like other men and I have no problem saying that, I don’t think anybody should have a problem with saying what they like, who they like or how they like.”
I’m A Celebrity airs tonight on ITV at 9pm
