Lucifer is currently filming the end of season five ahead of the next eight episodes being released on Netflix. Episode eight ended with God (played by Dennis Haysbert) making his first appearance in the show but some fans think he might be there to propose Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) replace him as ruler of Heaven – here’s why.

Will Lucifer replace God as ruler of Heaven?

Fans of Lucifer will know the devil has come a long way from when he was first introduced in season one.

From finding a purpose in arresting bad guys to falling for Chloe Decker (Lauren German), Lucifer has changed dramatically – and it’s left some viewers wondering how this will continue now God has been introduced.

Lucifer’s backstory is based around how he has a very complicated relationship with his father who cast him down to Hell to rule as its leader.

One theory proposed by fans revolves around how Lucifer might become God’s successor as the ultimate redemption arc for him.

Posting on Reddit, fan RobbieRNL wrote: “I think it’s an interesting thought to consider that the plan of God is to test Lucifer in his capabilities to replace God, with Chloe becoming the new goddess.

“As Dr Linda said: ‘When angels fall, they also rise.’ Lucifer has grown (risen) by learning what is good and bad.”

Some viewers loved the idea, with user makimagi adding: “Wouldn’t it be awesome if God passes the torch to Lucifer without his consent?

“And then [he] leaves everything behind, travelling to the other dimension where the Goddess of all creation is.”

Another fan even revealed how this actually happened in one of the comic book series which the show is loosely based on.

User boom_adam wrote: “Surprisingly in one of the comics he actually did become God.

“He created his own universe and basically told his people to not worship anyone.”

However, not everyone is so convinced with some fans arguing it would be uncharacteristic.

LuciferSPN added: “No! Being God is the last thing he wants and would be a betrayal to his character as he stands for free will.”

While nothing is confirmed yet, this is undoubtedly an interesting approach which the show could take.

Tom Ellis has also weighed in on Lucifer’s redemption storyline so far in an interview with SFX.

When asked about this, Ellis even confided how God will play a big role in it.

He said: “God does come in the second half of the season. Lucifer’s issues with his dad are at the heart of most of his problems.

“His redemption story has a lot to do with finding peace. A lot of his journey happens this year.

“This year is quite an emotional season – especially the second half because there’s a lot of baggage to be dealt with.”

Lucifer season 5 part A is available to stream on Netflix now.
