Peaky Blinders season 5 – Five burning questions from tonight’s episode including a shock murder

PEAKY Blinders returned to the small screen in speculator fashion for its fifth series, with Cillian Murphy’s character Thomas Shelby at the helm.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 left his company business at a huge loss and Ada’s shock pregnancy was revealed – here are the unanswered questions and big moments from the premiere episode.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from episode one of Peaky Blinders season five.

 1. Who is the MP Thomas did a job for?

Little is known about the MP Thomas sent the Peaky Blinders to carry out a robbery for in China Town.

It is unclear whether the man he threatened in the House of Commons is the gentlemen he had an agreement with.

Although it is likely the smartly dressed pensioner is his contact, as they discussed the mission and subsequent payment – £50,000 cash.

Yet viewers never got his name or occupation, however, we know Thomas’ acquaintance is also meant to be a high court judge.

2. Why are the photographs, letters and cheques so important to the MP?

Tension reached boiling point when Thomas threaten the man, who appeared to be a member of parliament, with the stolen goods.

The apparent MP went berserk after the Peaky Blinders warned him to get his £50,000 cash or risk the documents being made public.

Judging by his reaction, the paperwork has to be of great importance, however, very little is known about its content.

Perhaps, they contain something scandalous, which could ruin the career of the MP or an alliance of his.

Sadly, we will have to wait until the next episode to find out more about this mysterious man and the file he is intent on getting rid of.

3. Is Oswald Mosley secretly plotting against Thomas?

Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) seemed unimpressed by Thomas’ speech in the House of Commons and was seen with a vacant expression on his face, while other politicians gave the gangster a rousing applause.

The two men are connected as his constituency board is run by Thomas – yet Oswald appeared bothered by this situation.

“Let just say you’ve come to my attention,” he said with a menacing smirk, before Thomas walked off.

Have the two got a past? Or is it just political rivalry at its very best?

4. Is Thomas going to prison for Michael Levitt’s murder?

Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) was approached by Michael Levitt (Elliot Cowan) for an interview.

But his intrusive questions and suggestive statements rubbed the gangster-turned-politician the wrong way.

After threatening to expose the journalist’s dalliances with men, he later ended up getting shot as he entered a lift.

Of course, Thomas is the likely culprit and if he is linked to the killing it could not only ruin his political career but he would risk being hanged.

5. Will Polly be ousted for killing Inspector Campbell?

Polly Gray (Helen McCrory) assassinated Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill) after he forced her to have sex with him in series two.

She was nearly hung for his murder but narrowly avoided death, thanks to a clever plan conjured up by Thomas himself.

Nevertheless, her past has haunted her ever since and when Michael mentioned her arrest for Campbell’s death, it posed the question whether she would be punished for her crime later this series.

However, with the journalist now dead her chances of hanging seem slim yet nothing is impossible in eerie Birmingham.
