Rita Simons shares heartache that her deaf child can't lip-read people in masks

Ex-EastEnders star Rita Simons has told of how her deaf 14-year-old daughter Maiya is unable to lip-read people who are wearing face masks.

Taking to Twitter, the actress said: ‘Masks, not denying the need for them…

‘All I know is my deaf daughter has no idea what anyone is saying as she can’t lip read a person in a mask…

‘But we all wear ours anyway. Breaks my heart a little bit for her.’

Another said: ‘For my deaf teen (full BSL), seeing lip pattern + facial expression is so important. We bought clear masks and they make a huge difference but more people need to wear them. @NDCS_UK is running a campaign to promote clear masks, could you encourage your followers to use them?’

Rita, 43, is a mum to Maiya and her twin sister Jaimee.

She co-parents the girls with ex-husband Theo Silverston.

Rita has appeared in 975 episodes of EastEnders from 2007 to 2017 playing Roxy Mitchell.

Her co-star Scott Maslen this month revealed that Rita and her on-screen sister Samantha Womack would ‘gang up’ and play pranks on set.

Speaking on Secrets From the Square, he shared: ‘It’s like in school.. they’d leave things under my bed, like jacket potatoes with tuna in it. For days, weeks! And in my dressing room, Rita would come in and go “Have you not found it yet?” and I’d be like, “What are you talking about?” and she goes “The jacket potato with the tuna!”’

Rita appeared on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2018, where she was eliminated fourth. She will next year appear on stage in the musical Hairspray!
