'Toy Story 4': How Does It Compare to Pixar Sequels?

Most of us would agree that the creators of Toy Story 4 were allowed to add one last sequel to what has been a blockbuster at every turn of a script. Woody, the main character is flawed like all the rest of us, but sympathetic, as well. Toy Story 3 was the end of Andy’s (Woody’s owner) story, but Woody’s story had more to share with audiences.

This part of the franchise includes Bo Peep, who is now braver and more independent, and Forky, an innocent “spork,” who some call the funniest character yet. Tim Allen provides the voice of Buzz Lightyear, once again. Keanu Reeves voices the character Duke Caboom, Canadian stuntman.

Why does ‘Toy Story 4’ exist?

Many Toy Story fans were confused when the announcement of this sequel was published. After all, Toy Story 3 saw Andy morphing into a young adult, and all the toys were being given to preschool age Bonnie. The audiences who watched were weeping. Now that Woody, who only wants to love and be loved, had no Andy, he also had a sad life ahead of him.

To make things even worse, Bonnie did not think of Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) as the ringleader of the toy gang. Woody is relegated to Bonnie’s closet while everyone else is having tea parties and playing dress-up.

Some folks who have hearts of stone have even said that Toy Story 4 could have been created because the makers wanted another billion-dollar box-office hit.

But, ‘Toy Story 3’ completed my childhood

Many millennials were the same age as Andy was when Toy Story 1 came out. When Toy Story 3 came to theaters, they were tweens, just like Andy. The fourth sequel, when Andy was moving away from home, found millennials in the same space. They, along with some Pixar animators, thought the third sequel was “unsurpassable.” It’s obvious why it took so long for this sequel to appear.

Most people were satisfied when John Lasseter, the man who came up with the idea and oversaw the first two films, said:

We love these characters so much, they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before.

The bottom line

Josh Cooley, the film’s director, says Toy Story 4 mitigates and expands on Toy Story 3 naturally and inevitably. Tom Hanks says he thinks the movie is one of the best he viewed in his lifetime. Some British reviewers said the film was less moving than the last and repeated Toy Story 3.

Hanks warns audiences that Toy Story 4 calls for an entire box of tissues. There is an all-out search by Woody and Buzz, for Bo Peep who was not in sequel 3. Both Hanks and Allen teared up as they completed the audios on the film.

It seems that, as usual, Pixar knows what it is doing. Whether this was a “passion piece” or an additional grab at millions of dollars, very few viewers have been disappointed after watching the movie. As Allen said:

It is so emotional; it’s so funny; it’s so big. The idea they’ve come up with, I’m startled, Allen told “The Talk” (via “ET Canada”) in September. “(‘Toy Story 3’) was, I thought, amazing. This, I couldn’t even get through the last scene. They’ve got great characters but a couple of scenes toward the end were really hard to get through.

Oh, and congratulations to Forky the Spork for stealing the show and being the most relatable character ever to exist.
