The awards recognise the best in contemporary photography over the past 12 months, and span a host of creative genres.
Strict judging takes place to reward the best photographer across four main categories.
These include 'Open' which aims to find the best single image across 10 subcategories, 'Youth' covering work by photographers aged 12 to 19 and 'National' taking in the best single image taken by a local photographer in more than 60 countries.
The final, and most prestigious, of the four main groups is the professional category.
Prizes include $25,000 for the Photographer of the Year and $5,000 for the overall Open competition winner.
All category winners will receive the latest Sony Digital Imaging equipment and the overall competition plus Professional category winners will be flown to London to attend the Sony World Photography Awards dinner at Somerset House in April 2019.
