A Bronx woman died as a result of injuries she suffered weeks earlier when her longtime boyfriend stabbed her in the foot with a sword, police said Monday.
Dayanara Carela, 44, and her longtime love, 43-year-old Gilbert Nunez, were arguing inside their Kingsbridge Heights home on West 238th Street on Nov. 3, when Nunez struck her once in the left foot with the sword, police said.
Carela was taken by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was originally listed in stable condition and later released.
Meanwhile, Nunez was charged on Nov. 5 with felony assault for the sword attack, police said.
But Carela’s condition deteriorated, and on Nov. 18 she suffered a medical episode. She was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, but could not be saved.
The City Medical Examiner determined Carela died as a result of the Nov. 3 attack, and police have classified her death as a homicide.
The Bronx District Attorney’s office will determine whether Nunez will be charged for her death.
