Let’s face it: not every day can be a good hair day. I have a few go-to styles that I wear weekly, but when my hair is dirty and I don’t want to wash it, I often struggle to make myself look put together. Thankfully, TikTok has a solution for that. The latest hair trend going viral on the app has been the answer to all of my dirty hair woes, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone and anyone. Let’s give a warm welcome to the “TikTok top knot.”

Unlike the ever-popular supermodel slicked-back bun (famously worn by celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Kim Kardashian), which sits low at the nape of the neck, the TikTok top knot is situated higher up on the head. The style is often seen on Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, and I can completely see why they love it after testing it out for myself. The look isn’t difficult to achieve — it only takes a few minutes and a couple of key products, but every time I wear it, it garners tons of compliments.

I only wash my hair twice a week max, which means that while I like to wear my hair styled down about three days a week, the rest of the time my hair is up in a ponytail or in a claw clip. This style is chic enough to wear out to dinner or even to an event, and it also looks good on all of my daily video calls for work.

After testing this style quite a few times, I’ve learned that achieving the perfect top knot starts with hair prep. If my hair is very dirty and I plan on washing it later that night or the next day, I usually start by applying a pre-shampoo serum like the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Pre-wash Hair Treatment Oil ($36) to my scalp. This helps all of my baby hairs stay down while I get the benefit of a treatment at the same time. I also like to coat the mid-lengths and ends of my hair in an oil like the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil ($87) to give everything a sleek look.

Next, it’s time to start styling. After parting my hair down the middle, I start by splitting my hair into two sections. I section off the front pieces into a triangle shape and clip them at the top of my head to work with later. From there, I begin working the remainder of my hair into a high ponytail. I aim to get it as much toward the crown of my head as possible while smoothing it out with a boar bristle brush. After I’ve secured everything with an elastic, I use the Tancho High Grade Hair Stick ($12) to smooth everything back.

Then, to finish everything off, I twist my ponytail up into a bun and secure it with another hair tie or bobby pins. Once everything is secure, I go over any bumps again with the Tancho Stick, and I set everything using a strong-hold hairspray.

I’ve been wearing this hairstyle at least once a week for the last few months, and it’s easily become one of my favorites. I like it even better than a slicked-back bun because it sits high up on my head and I’m able to sit in a car or in bed comfortably without having a bumpy hairstyle irritating the back of my neck. It also lasts all day with the proper styling, and it’s easy to take from day to night. If it’s good enough for Bella Hadid, it’s good enough for me. If you’ve been looking for a chic new hairstyle that’s a fun twist on the classic slicked-back bun (and better, IMO), give the TikTok top knot a try. You won’t be disappointed.
