The joy of hair is that it’s so changeable.
Whether you fancy chopping it all off into a bob, adding extensions or opt for one of this season’s biggest hair colour trends (gingerbread caramel, anyone?) there is a whole world of pictures you can take straight to your hairdresser.
However, the celebrity set always has and always will prove to be a valid source of hair inspiration.
Whether it’s Emma Roberts’ new honey blonde style, Britney Spears going back to brunette, Bella Thorne’s surprising switch to green or Mila Kunis’ turquoise dip-dye, here are the best celebrity hair colour transformations of recent times.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is heading into summer with a complete hair transformation.
The singer, who is known for her signature dark, brunette hair has dyed it platinum blonde. The new look was done by hairstylists Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri, co-owners of Hollywood-based salon Nine Zero One.
The stylists broke down the steps on Instagram, explaining that they started by prepping Gomez’s hair with serum for protection. They then highlighted every strand of hair and let it process for a while.
On the Nine Zero One Instagram page, they added: “The entire process took 200 foils, several bowls of bleach, and eight hours of hair magic!”
They also made sure to keep Gomez’s roots natural to allow for easy regrowth.
Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid is known for her signature long, blonde hair but now, the model has switched things up.
The 25-year-old posted a series of pictures on Instagram Stories showing the process of getting her hair dyed a gorgeous, fiery shade of red.
When she shared the final result, Hadid revealed that her inspiration came from Netflix hit The Queen’s Gambit, in which Anna Taylor-Joy’s character Beth Harmon has red hair.
Alongside the picture, Hadid wrote: “She is dedicated to everyone responsible for The Queen’s Gambit.” Her hair was coloured by stylist Panos Papandrianos, who also shared a series of pictures on Instagram, writing “Ginger for Gigi”.
Following on from Sarah Hyland and Lucy Hale’s redhead transformations (below), could red be the colour of the season? We think so.
Sarah Hyland
Sarah Hyland is now a redhead. The Modern Family actor, who usually has dark brunette hair, has dyed her hair a gorgeous copper red. Posting her new look on Instagram, Hyland wrote: “Getting back to my Scottish/Irish roots. Also, I’m bored and watched all of Outlander for a second time.”
Hyland has also proven that all colours look gorgeous with red hair, including red itself. For the Golden Globes, the actor wore a stunning red ballgown and had her crimson hair out in tumbling Hollywood-glam curls for the perfect monochromatic look. Posting a series of images on Instagram, she wrote: “Lady in Red… literally everywhere… for the #goldenglobes”.
Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale has had numerous hair colour transformations over the years but one shade we didn’t know we needed to see on her? Bright red.
The Pretty Little Liars star has taken her hair from jet black to a gorgeous copper red. The dye job was completed by Hale’s long-time hairstylist Kristen Ess.
Posting a short video of Hale’s new look on her Instagram feed, Ess wrote, “I mean!!!! This gets an in-feed post. @lucyhale has had every hair colour under the sun EXCEPT red. My lil colourist heart is full and now we officially know this chick looks good with any hair colour. thank you for trusting me to do this (and thank you for Covid testing w me beforehand)”.
Hale commented on the post, writing:”I’ve always had the feistiness of a redhead so this is fitting”.
Fans fell in love with Hale’s new look and began flooding the comments section, asking Ess which products from her haircare range were used to create the look along with a flurry of compliments. Our favourite?
One user wrote: “THIS IS THE BEST HAIR COLOUR ON HER. I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED GINGER LUCY UNTIL I SAW GINGER LUCY.” We agree.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry is known for her constant hair colour transformations – and along the way, she proves that every hair shade looks incredible on her. Case in point: her latest neon orange dye job.
The singer posted a picture on Instagram showing her new vibrant orange hair, complete with a matching orange outfit and lipstick.
Promoting her performance for Tomorrowland, a virtual festival, she wrote: “Orange you glad TODAY’S THE DAY!” We see what she did there.
Cardi B
Cardi B is the definition of cool. Alongside her long list of achievements in the music industry, which includes a multitude of awards and becoming the first female rapper to surpass a billion streams on Spotify, she has also cemented her position as a fashion icon. Just look at her latest Instagram post.
The rapper posted two pictures on the social media platform, showing her wearing head-to-toe Louis Vuitton. In the second picture, she showed that the designer branding continued onto her hair.
Cardi B had the iconic LV logo airbrushed onto her ponytail and it looks incredible. Forget logo t-shirts, maybe logo hair is the next big thing.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has had fun with her hair during lockdown. The singer experimented with two-toned hairdos and tried various shades, including candy floss pink, cherry red and pastel peach.
But to decide on her next hair colour, Lipa used Instagram to ask her fans for their opinion. She posted an old picture of herself with dark brown hair, captioning the image “should I bring her back?” and the comments section was quickly flooded with a resounding ‘yes’.
Two days later, Lipa posted a picture of herself with dark brunette hair. She captioned the picture “back by popular demand”. We can’t wait to see what she tries next…
The Duchess of Cambridge
Making an appearance at the launch of BBC Education’s initiative Tiny Happy People, the Duchess of Cambridge revealed a lighter new hair colour for summer. The royal now has honey ‘bronde’ (blonde/brunette) highlights all over her hair, making it appear golden and thicker.
Honey blonde has been hailed as one of the biggest hair colour trends for 2020, so we have no doubt there will be many more similar transformations to come.
Ariel Winter
Ever since Modern Family wrapped in February, Ariel Winter has been experimenting with her hair colour. First, she dyed her signature dark brunette hair to strawberry blonde. Then red. Now, the actress is trying platinum blonde.
Posting a series of pictures on her Instagram, Winter referenced Game of Thrones and its iconic character Daenerys Targaryen, who also had platinum blonde hair. In her caption, Winter wrote: “Winter Is Coming!!!!!!!!!!!”
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has been having a lot of fun with various hair colours during lockdown – just scroll down to see.
First, the singer went pastel pink, then she posted a picture of tangerine-coloured hair alongside an orange emoji.
Now, Lipa has gone bright red. Posting a picture on Instagram, she simply captioned the image with five cherry emojis. We can’t wait to see which colour she tries next…
Sarah Hyland
Another day, another celebrity hair makeover at home. This time, Sarah Hyland has taken her signature brown hair and dyed it magenta.
Posting a series of pictures on Instagram, it seems the Modern Family actress was inspired by Disney’s The Little Mermaid, as she wrote in the caption: “I wanna be where the people are…”.
She added, “#QuaranTINT crew (I did this all by myself! Very proud).
However, Hyland later took to Instagram Stories to reveal that the final colour was actually a mistake. “It was supposed to be pink…. thanks Venus Retrograde”.
Telling her fans the hair colour was only temporary, she followed up with some good advice, telling them: “Please don’t bleach your own hair at home. That scares me.”

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is the most recent celebrity to get a hair colour transformation during lockdown.
The singer posted a photo on Instagram, in which she has fun pink and blue highlights– and proves you don’t need to settle for just one colour when considering a hair dye job.
While it looks incredible on its own, the colours pop even more against her matching pink eyeshadow and lipstick.
In the post, Swift is promoting the viewing of City of Lover concert in Paris, which is available to stream on Disney+ from today.
Ruby Rose
Proving that she’s the epitome of cool, Ruby Rose has dyed her buzz cut half pink and half blue.
Sharing a picture on Instagram, she wrote, “What can I say!? Sometimes you just need to feel blue and other times you need pink to lighten your day.”
A hair look that perfectly sums up our feelings in lockdown: we love it.
Dua Lipa
No stranger to an at-home dye job, Dua Lipa has already tried her hand at pink hair since lockdown began. Just scroll down for the evidence.
And now, no more than two weeks later, she’s onto the next colour in the rainbow: orange.
She shared a video of herself with her peachy-toned hair alongside the caption “orangina quarantina?”. We just wonder which colour will be next…
Selma Blair
Selma Blair has been rocking a shaved head since last summer, after revealing to her followers that she had lost her hair due to her chemotherapy treatments for multiple sclerosis. And, for a while, she has been celebrating her “salt and pepper” strands as they have slowly grown back in, insisting that she takes nothing for granted.
Like so many others in lockdown, however, Blair has decided to get experimental with a DIY colour kit. A DIY colour kit supplied by her stylist and friend Lorri Goddard, no less.
Taking to Instagram, she shared a photo of her newly deep chocolate brunette pixie crop. And, judging by the comments, the hue reminds fans of her characters in Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions.
“Vivian’s back!” wrote one.
Others, though, kept their focus on the here and now.
“Always so pretty,” read one comment.
“You look radiant,” added another.

Dua Lipa
As we approach week five of lockdown, some of us might be debating a dramatic hair transformation. While most hairdressers advise against dramatic dye jobs, it seems Dua Lipa has decided to give it a go.
Instead of dyeing her entire head of hair, Lipa made it a bit easier for herself (and boyfriend Anwar Hadid, who helped) by focusing the pink dye only on the blonde sections of her hair.

The actress has dyed her signature blonde hair to bright blue and cut it into a shoulder-skimming bob. Posting a picture on Instagram, Duff simply captioned the photo with a shoulder shrugging emoji and “yea.” While she hasn’t shared any tips on how she achieved the new look at home, we think it looks great.
Ariel Winter
Ariel Winter has said goodbye to Modern Family with a new hair colour. The actor, who played Alex Dunphy for 11 years, first posted a series of images of her signature black hair, writing “bye bye dark hair 🙂 I don’t think I’ll miss you :)))”. Now that the show has wrapped, Winter is free to dye her hair any colour she wants – and she chose strawberry red.
Hours after her first post, Winter posted a picture and video of her new hair. In the caption, she wrote, “I’m a strawberry and a shortcake sooooo new nickname?”
Vanessa Hudgens
Currently on screens in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence led film, Bad Boys For Life, Vanessa Hudgens has been on the press run as of late.
We’re used to seeing her dark brunette hair in all the roles she takes on, but she’s recently made the subtle switch to a warmer, lighter brown.
Chad Wood is the man behind the transformation, showcased the warmer brown hair on Instagram.
The colour itself was created by Redken brand ambassador, Cassondra Kaeding, and even this small change makes the actor’s hair look as enviable as ever.

Following on from her breakout role in The Haunting of Hill House, Victoria Pedretti is dominating our screens with her recent role as Love in Netflix’s You.
In all of her roles so far, we’ve only seen Pedretti with gorgeous dark, brunette hair. But now, the actor has dyed her hair blonde – and it looks incredible.

2019 will officially be remembered as the year the beauty world went green. And we don’t mean everyone became eco angels (although, of course, many brands are working on that) but that between the rising trends for green nails, eye shadow and hair (courtesy of Billie Eilish), the colour was pretty much everywhere this year.

Known for her signature blonde hair, Ashley Benson, who starred in Pretty Little Liars, has moved over to the dark side just in time for winter – and it’s making us want to follow suit.
Benson’s newly dyed hair is a rich shade of chocolate brown and it looks beautiful paired with her shoulder-length, wavy bob.
Lady Gaga
So, it looks like Lady Gaga just brought back the pastel pink hair trend in one fell swoop. Never one to shy away from a bold look, the singer uploaded a picture to Instagram on 5 October that was actually supposed to be about her recently-launched make-up line (which you can find out more about here) but it was her newly coloured hair that caught our attention.
Gaga styled her hair in vintage pin curls, paired it with a dog tooth-print mini dress and knee high boots for a glam ‘50s look.
Lizzo
It looks like rainbow-bright hair is making a serious comeback. On September 28, Mila Kunis was photographed with blonde hair and turquoise ends (scroll down to see the evidence). Now, Lizzo has debuted purple hair – and she’s making a serious case for wigs, too.
Her new long hair is plum at the roots and fades out to a pinky shade at the ends and is giving us serious colour envy. Whoever said autumn was the time to go darker is officially wrong.
Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown is known for her short brunette hair (or for having a buzz cut if the first season of Stranger Things is anything to go by). But this weekend, as she made an appearance at Covent Garden’s flagship Boots store in aid of her new beauty line, Florence by Mills, it looks like she’s done a complete 180 on us. Not only has the actor gone a beautiful shade of honey blonde for autumn, but she’s also added some serious extensions.

Mila Kunis
We’ve never known Kunis as anything other than brunette, but the actor has decided to switch things up a bit for the change in seasons. Despite wearing a baseball cap, it looks as though she’s dyed her hair blonde and added some turquoise dip-dye. Some say it’s for her role in the upcoming film Four Good Days. Time will tell us whether that’s true or not, but either way, we approve.
Maisie Williams
After dying her hair purple when Game of Thrones finished filming and then going pink not long after, Maisie Williams then chose to cut her hair into a chin-length, choppy bob and dyed it a rich chocolate brown shade that looks healthy and supremely glossy. Into it.
Whoopi Goldberg
Long-time legend Goldberg recently switched her trademark hair for white dreadlocks ahead of her role in Stephen King’s The Stand, where she plays 109-year-old Mother Abigail. The look was revealed on USA show The View.
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has been every colour under the sun, but she recently debuted a shorter, choppier style paired with an inch of neon green at the very ends on her Instagram Stories. Not many people could pull it off, but Lovato manages to without even trying.
Kate Middleton
Instead of sticking to tradition and going a few shades darker for autumn, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out with a lighter, honey blonde blow-dry instead. The look was showcased on Princess Charlotte’s first day of school at the start of September.

Forever a favourite, Britters recently opted to switch her blonde hair to a medium brown shade. She’s previously been brunette but not for a few years, and she cited her sister as the person who inspired her to go back to the dark side.
