Breakdown of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ ‘fairytale’ relationship in full

Princess DianaandPrince Charleshad one of the most high profile royal relationships ever.

The pair, who wed in 1981, had a romance and a wedding that was dubbed a “fairytale” by royal well wishers and as her profile grew, Princess Diana became one of the most loved royal women across the globe.

However, the then Prince and Princess of Wales weren’t living a fairytale in reality and over many occasions, the cracks in their relationship were shown publicly.

In the second half of the 1980s, after only a few years of marriage, rumours of Charles and Diana's unhappiness became commonplace.

One of the most obvious signs that Charles and Diana's marriage would not last much longer was their final joint tour in 1992.

During a visit to South Korea, the pair were photographed on several occasions looking very unhappy, and the press commented the same.

Not long afterwards, then prime minister John Major announced in the House of Commons that Charles and Diana intended to separate.

He added that the royal couple had "no plans to divorce" and that the decision had been reached "amicably".

Two years later in 1994, Charles admitted in an ITV documentary that he had been faithful to the Princess until the marriage had "irretrievably broken down".

The revelation prompted Diana to respond with her very famous 'revenge dress' moment during a visit to the Serpentine Gallery on the night the documentary aired.

In 1995, Diana also spoke out about her failing marriage to BBC Panorama, an interview the broadcaster has since vowed not to air again after Lord Dyson's inquiry found reporter Martin Bashir used "deceitful behaviour" to obtain it.

Prince Charles was thought to have resumed his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles in 1986, while Diana was also thought to have had affairs during her marriage.

However, Camilla's divorce from Andrew Parker Bowles was not finalised until 1995, while Prince Charles and Princess Diana made their separation permanent in 1996.

In 1997, Princess Diana suddenly died in a car crash in Paris, shocking the world and prompting an outpouring of public mourning.

As the world marks the 25th anniversary of Diana's death this month, royal biographer Andrew Morton said the failed marriage "will always haunt" the future King.

He toldPeople: "His tragedy is whatever he does, whatever he says, however he behaves, he will be remembered for one thing: the fact that his fairytale marriage ended.

"Just as Henry VIII is remembered for his six wives, Prince Charles is remembered for his first wife.

"It will always haunt him. His life has been defined by his marriage."
