Back in 2018, Netflix dropped one of the most nail-biting, spine-tingling films of the year: Bird Box.
Starring major names like Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich and even Machine Gun Kelly, the movie followed a young mother, Malorie Hayes (Sandra) as she tried to protect herself and her two kids from a mysterious entity that caused all those who looked at it to kill themselves.
Upon its release, the post-apocalyptic film was a major hit with fans – and ever since, many have been calling for a second instalment.
Five years later, it looks as if the wait is finally over (well, kind of). It comes as Josh Malerman – the author behind the novel of the same name – announced back in 2019 that he was writing a sequel, thanks to the success of Netflix’s adaptation.
While he did write a follow-on novel, 2020’s Malorie, named after the main character of Bird Box, the streaming service decided not to pick up on it.
Instead, they fashioned their own new film based on the original, and have described it as a spin-off taking place in the same alternate world with the same timeline.
Still, it’s close enough to a sequel for us to get excited about, right? Here’s everything we know so far about Bird Box Barcelona, including its release date to cast to storylines…
What is Bird Box Barcelona about?
As the title suggests, the new Bird Box film is based in Barcelona. It takes place at the same time as the first movie – just instead of being in the US, it follows the outbreak as it hits Spain.
Taking on a similar premise to Sandra Bullock’s version, Netflix’s new offering shows how a father and daughter duo, named Sebastian and Anna, attempt to survive in the post apocalyptic landscape.
They too join up with a new group of survivors who are all in search of safety.
However, things seem to get a little darker, as the group soon realise there are more sinister forces at work.
Back in March 2021, Deadline reported that if it’s a hit with fans, Bird Box Barcelona could be the first of more spin-off films set in different countries but in the same universe.
Who will star in Bird Box Barcelona?
Unfortunately, the original cast won’t be returning for the spin-off. This is obviously because it’s the Spanish version, which means Sandra (or Malorie) would have been trying to escape the entity on the other side of the Atlantic.
In terms of who will star in the film, fans of the 2020 Spanish Netflix film The Paramedic will be happy to see Mario Casas in the lead role as Sebastian. BAFTA-winning English actor Georgina Campbell is set to play his daughter, Anna, while other actors include: Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia.
When will Bird Box Barcelona be released?
Exciting news, people! Because the release of Bird Box Barcelona is just around the corner. The streaming service is set to drop the film on 14 July, which means it’s time to prepare yourself…
