Katy Perry exhibited exactly why she is renowned as one of the world’s most acclaimed music artists on Wednesday night as she kickstarted her first-ever Las Vegas residency, Play, at Resorts World. 

The 37-year-old singing sensation put on a pop-tastic show her avid fans would not forget, particularly when she lactated beer out of her sultry bra dress made of cans, harking back to her 2010 California Gurls video, before making several cheeky references to the Covid pandemic with the help of giant toilet and mask props.  

According to reports, the pop star will be performing 32 shows up until March, which will see her pocket $168million, making her the latest star to cash in with nightly Sin City shows.

The beer-indulging may have been a standout moment difficult to outdo, but the Teenage Dream songstress ensured she pulled out all of the wardrobe stops elsewhere during the momentous evening, including a bold sparking yellow-and-orange slit gown and a pink-and-white vinyl mini dress. 

In total the star donned eight different looks for the show, also including an eye-catching white mini dress a pink PVC dress with a toadstool-inspired hat, before changing into a pink Cleopatra-style gown as she emerged from a keyhole.  

For another fun look, the star channelled the 60s in a bubble-inspired white dress as she performed alongside a enormous inflatable ducks.

Given the impact of the recent Covid pandemic, it was no surprise that Katy alluded to the virus with several oversized props, including a huge mask, and toilet rolls, to reference panic-buying of the essential at the start of the crisis last year.

1. CELINE DION – $681.3million 

Celine Dion is one of Vegas’ longest-standing performers and made $476,000 per show during her lengthy stint on-stage.

She has played 427 shows. Her two residencies, A New Day, which ran from 2003 to 2007 and Celine  from 2011 to 2019 combined to gross $681.3 million and sell 4,555,752 tickets, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.

Her wealth is now estimated at some $800 million. Her 2019 earnings alone topped over $37 million. 

2. BRITNEY SPEARS – $140million

In 2013, Britney Spears signed a two-year residency at Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The 2014 to 2015 leg of the shows were so successful that she signed on to extend the residency for another two years. 

The shows wrapped up in December 2017. She made $475,000 per show, where over four years – around 1,500 days – she performed nearly 250 shows. 

3. ELTON JOHN – $131million

The Million Dollar Piano was Elton John’s residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which launched in 2011 and ran until 2018.

He made $500,000 per show in the incredibly lucrative performances. 

4. JENNIFER LOPEZ – $120million 

Jennifer Lopez signed a residency with Planet Hollywood that would pay her $350,000 per show between 2016-2018. TMZ previously claimed.

 In August 2016, the residency raked in over $1million in ticket sales — the highest gross in Planet Hollywood history, Billboard reported. 

5. CHER – $97million 

Cher’s Classic Cher residency also took place at The Colosseum. She performed 192 shows during the nearly three years she performed at the venue and raked in nearly $100million. 

6. LADY GAGA – $75million 

In 2017, Lady Gaga penned a two-year contract for a residency at MGM Park Theater. The deal earned her an incredible $75million. The sum meant she was earning an incredible $1million per performance.

7. ROD STEWART – $50million 

In 2011, Rod Steward signed an eye-watering $50million contract for 18 shows in Las Vegas at the Colosseum, Caesars Palace. 

The vast pay cheque meant the star was raking in $2.7million per show – making his Vegas’ highest paid star with Rod Stewart: The Hits in Vegas. Between 2011 and 2018, the show raked in $53,911,159 in profits.   

8. BRUNO MARS 

In 2019, Bruno Mars signed up for a mini Vegas residency for 11 shows at MGM Park. While his earnings are unknown, it was reported in 2016 that he was offered $950,000 per show to become a Sin City resident.

She has been giving fans glimpses at the behind-the-scenes preparations ahead of the show on social media, sharing videos of props and costumes.

Last week she unveiled one of her many stage props – a large, animated toilet – in a brief video shared to Instagram.

‘Only 8 more days until you can come to PERRY PLAYLAND’ captioned Perry, adding that those in attendance will ‘be flush with happiness!’  

The giant toilet prop comes in a blinding shade of orange and boasted two toilet paper rolls for eyes. The lid moved up and down to mimic a mouth. 

Perry recently revealed how she’s been physically preparing for the hectic residency schedule.

Lucrative deal: As reported by Electronic Vegas earlier this year, the Witness songstress allegedly will ‘perform two nights a week for four months during the $168 million contract’

The singer said she has been working out three to five days a week. 

She also told Entertainment Tonight that she has mostly been focusing on ‘strength training and weights,’ but also loves to take hikes with her family, including her partner, actor Orlando Bloom, and the couple’s one-year-old daughter Daisy Dove.

‘We also like to hike. Orlando has one of those hiking backpacks that we can pop Daisy into; she loves it,’ shared the Grammy nominee.

The singer’s beau also helps out with her fashion choices.

Perry told E! News on December 15 that the actor was happy to help her pick out the wardrobe for the big show.

‘We talked about the costumes and the makeup. Sometimes when I’m going to a fitting, he’ll ask for notes or I’ll show him this,’ she said, promising fans that her outfits will feature plenty of rhinestones.
