Oprah with Harry and Meghan is currently airing on CBS, and Oprah Winfrey is questioning the couple all about their decision to leave as senior members of the royal family.
“What was the tipping point?” Oprah asked.
“I was desperate. I went to all the places I thought I should go to to ask for help,” Prince Harry said.
Oprah then clarified, “You asked for help and couldn’t get it?”
“Basically,” he responded.
The couple then explained that they never actually left the family and they just wanted to step away from their senior roles. They suggested to the family that they move to another Commonwealth country such as New Zealand, South Africa, or elsewhere.
“My biggest concern was history repeating itself,” Prince Harry said. “What I was seeing was history repeating itself. But more, perhaps, far more dangerous. Because then you add race in. And you add social media in.” Prince Harry confirmed he was talking about his mother, Princess Diana.
Oprah then asked, “Why did you leave?”
Prince Harry responded, “Lack of support and lack of understanding.”
Oprah then clarified further, “Was the move about getting away from the UK press, or was the move because you weren’t getting enough support from ‘the firm?’”
“Did you blindside the Queen?
“No, I never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect from her,” Prince Harry said.
Prince Harry guesses the story came from inside the institution.
Prince Harry revealed he spoke to his father, Prince Charles, and grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, before making their move official on January 7, 2020.
Prince Harry then revealed that at a certain point before the announcement, Prince Charles stopped taking his calls.
“I took matters into my own hands. I needed to do this for my family. It’s not a surprise to anyone. I could see where this was headed,” Harry said in response to Oprah asking why.
“The way that I saw it…there was a way of doing things…but for this union, and the specifics around her race,” Harry said, adding there was an opportunity for his family to come forward and speak out about race, media abuse, and more.
Then, Oprah questioned if Meghan was the reason why they left the royal family.
“Can you imagine how little sense that makes? I left my career, my life, because I love him. And our plan was to do this forever,” Meghan said.
“Do you think you would have ever stepped back if it were not for Meghan?” Oprah asked Harry.
“No. I wouldn’t have been able to. I myself was trapped, as well. I didn’t see a way out. I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped,” he said.
