Known for his distinctive London accent, Sir Michael is considered a British film icon having appeared in more than 130 productions in a career spanning over 60 years. And he has also been an avid supporter of the UK’s decision to withdraw from the European Union. Sir Michael, 84, got behind the Leave campaign in the early days, stating he would “rather be a poor master than a rich servant” and has continued to speak positively about Brexit since.

Reacting to the results of the 2016 Referendum, Sir Michael said the British public voted for “freedom” and “it will be alright”.

He told Sky News that “it wasn’t about the racism, immigrants or anything – it was about freedom”.

He added: “Politics is always chaotic.

“In politics, you’re always going into areas you’ve never been before, so you’re always going to get lost and then you’re going to find your way, and then it’ll be alright.”

And on top of his support for Brexit, Sir Michael has also been critical of the EU.

He said: “To me, I think what you have in Europe is a sort of government-by-proxy of everybody who has now got carried away.

“You cannot be dictated to by thousands of faceless civil servants who make these rules and you say: ‘Wait a minute is that right?’

“Then they argue about financially but we buy more from them than we sell to them.”

During his interview with Sky News in 2017, Sir Michael also stated that he would not be retiring anytime soon.

He said: “People always say, ‘Are you going to retire?’ and of course the movie business retires you.

“You get paid a fortune for kissing the most beautiful women in the world – not a bad job is it?

“That’s why none of us retire early.”

More recently, it has been reported that Sir Michael could appear in a future ‘Fast & Furious’ film following comments from fellow actor Vin Diesel.

He said: “I guess if I were to think where we’re going with the next chapter, Michael Caine.

“I might have found a way if I can redesign the mythology or added little elements of the mythology.

“I could do something with Helen Mirren and Michael Caine’s character and play something out.

“I could introduce something for the future.”

It would see the two-time Academy Award winner reunited with Diesel after they appeared in ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ together.

Sir Michael also starred in the 1969 classic ‘The Italian Job,’ which is considered by many to be one of the greatest car chase movies ever made.

And since then he has featured in countless more iconic films.

In 2000, he received a BAFTA Fellowship and was knighted by the Queen in recognition of his contribution to cinema.
