‘It’s been a horrible year, the energy crisis has been disastrous!’: Martin Lewis takes a swipe at Prime Minister Liz Truss as he scoops the TV Expert gong at the National Television Awards

Martin Lewis gave a passionate speech as he scooped the coveted TV Expert gong  at the National Television Awards on Thursday. 

The Martin Lewis Money Show host, 50, wasted no time taking a swipe at Liz Truss’ government and the difficult winter ahead for families as he took to the stage at the OVO Arena Wembley in London.

Filled with emotion the financial whizz spoke about the ‘horrible’ and ‘disastrous’ year the country had endured with the energy crisis and said many have been left with ‘terrible issues and mental health problems’.

Revealing that he believed 2023 could be just as bleak he declared: ‘Whoever said we’ve had enough of experts, no we haven’t we need them more than ever right now’.

Taking to the stage Martin said: ‘When you’re up against an international treasure like David Attenborough you don’t normally expect to win, I’m quite shocked. Whoever said we’ve had enough of experts, no we haven’t we need them more than ever right now’.

An emotional Martin continued: ‘Thank you so much to Claire and Angelica and everyone at the Martin Lewis Money Show and also to the web team who feed me the information and do the analysis for Money Saving Expert.

Scary: Filled with emotion the financial whizz spoke about the ‘horrible year’ the country had endured with the energy crisis and said many have been left with ‘terrible issues and mental health problems’ 

‘It’s been a pretty horrible year financially and the energy crisis has been disastrous and left many people in terrible issues and mental health problems. I’m afraid the next year with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rents is gonna be pretty bad’.

‘But that’s for my show next Tuesday, tonight this nerd is gonna party! Thank you and good night.’ 

Later taking to social media the star shared a grinning snap as he grasped the shiny award alongside his wife Lara Lewington, 43.

Thanks: He held his shiny award high in thanks before leaving the stage 

He wrote: ‘#NTAs Still gobsmacked, thanks to all who voted. It’s a huge privilege to have your support. I don’t really drink, maybe one a year, but maybe it’ll be tonight’. 

This year’s NTAs are broadcasting live from a brand new venue of Wembley’s OVO Arena with Joel Dommett hosting. 

Sir Lenny Henry is to be presented with the coveted gold Special Recognition Award at the annual ceremony on Thursday night.

This year’s National Television Awards will honour the 64-year-old and his trailblazing career in UK television, which has endured for nearly 50 years. 

Celebrity fans will be seen paying tribute to the comedian and fundraising Comic Relief frontman when the awards are broadcast live on ITV from the OVO Arena, Wembley.

Sir Lenny has been a mainstay on TV for nearly 50 years, starting with his 1975 victory on New Faces at the age of 16 which led to further acclaim on such era-defining shows as Tiswas and Three of a Kind.

Breaking new ground for black talent, he went on to experience huge success with his own sketch comedy series before playing a key role in the formation of Comic Relief. 

More recent projects have seen him diversify into acting, most notably on stage as Othello and on screen in the big-budget Amazon Prime series, Lord of the Rings: the Rings of Power.

Among those congratulating Sir Lenny for his achievements as a writer, campaigner, comedian and presenter will be Hollywood superstar Whoopi Goldberg, who says, ‘If you want to know what a superhero looks like, take a look at Sir Lenny Henry.’
