New Wonka trailer fuels Timothée Chalamet and Johnny Depp comparisons

New Wonka trailer fuels Timothée Chalamet and Johnny Depp comparisons as some fans insist the Dune star’s incarnation falls short

The first trailer for the long awaited Wonka movie has fuelled comparisons between Timothee Chalamet and Johnny Depp, after it hit the internet on Tuesday.

The Dune star has transformed into the literary hero for the whimsical prequel, becoming the third star to take on the role.

And while some fans couldn’t hide their excitement at seeing Timothee’s light-hearted take on the character, others insisted he wouldn’t come close to Johnny’s performance in 2005’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Some fans also admitted the film would struggle to top their childhood love of both Depp’s version, and Gene Wilder’s version in the 1971 film Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

The trailer shows an idealistic Wonka  doing all he can to live out his dream of becoming a chocolatier which even means taking on the ‘chocolate cartel,’ and boasts an all-star cast including Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant.

Magical: The Dune star has transformed into the literary hero for the whimsical prequel, becoming the third star to take on the role

One tweeted: ‘Unpopular opinion I guess, and even if it is a prequel, I cannot imagine another #Wonka than Johnny Depp. It has left a huge impression as a kid… let’s see.’

Another simple posted: ‘Johnny Depp is my Willy Wonka.’

One user noted: ‘Praying Wonka will be good!

‘Loved the book when I was younger, loved the original (aside from the tunnel scene which gives me a headache these days) and unlike some I do actually like the Johnny Depp version. Timothee looks perfect for the role.’

‘So many feelings, especially having worked on the Johnny Depp Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Feels a bit too whimsical, but then the ending of the trailer… the ending… bloody hell,’ one fan added.

But some fans were full of praise for the trailer, admitting they were excited to see Timothee’s new, younger take on Wonka.

One stated: ‘Those who criticise Timmy for not doing justice to Depp’s depiction of Wonka fail to recognise that Timmy’s portrayal represents a young and optimistic version of Wonka, envisioning his future factor.’

‘Timothee is the perfect mix of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. #Wonka seems as whimsical as Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. As fark and poignant as Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.’

Just opinions! Some fans took to social media to insist Timothee’s take on the character wouldn’t come close to Johnny’s

We love it! But some fans were full of praise for the trailer, admitting they were excited to see Timothee’s new, younger take on Wonka

‘With hints of The Greatest Showman and Paddingdon. I’m far more excited for this than Dune p2,’ another shared.

A third posted: ‘Despite being Wonka in his youth, this looks different from both previous takes. Like he takes a bit of Wilder and Depp but still makes it his own.’

‘After seeing what Johnny Depp did, Timothee Chalamet is brave AF to even attempt the role of Willy.

‘By the looks of the trailer, we’ll be talking about this one for quite some time too,’ one fan shared.

A user also lauded: ‘This looks tooooo much fun! Can’t help but also think about Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp and their versions of Willy Wonka. So excited for this!’

‘Getting vibes from both Gene Wilder’s and Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka. Timothee Chalamet is going to do so good in this movie! He looks amazing!’ one tweeted.

The trailer began with Wonka declaring: ‘I have spent the past seven years traveling the world perfecting my craft. You see I’m something of a magician, inventor, and chocolate maker. So quiet up and listen down, nope scratch that, reverse it.’

Oscar-winner Olivia Colman’s role is not known yet but her character seemingly believes in the aspiring chocolatier as she tells him: ‘Mr. Wonka I can see you’re a man of great ingenuity.’

The audience is then introduced to Wonka’s sidekick portrayed by Calah Lane who asks what he is doing.

Wonka enthusiastically replies: ‘I’m making chocolate of course. How do you like it? Dark, white, nutty, absolutely insane?’

Then the conflict of the film is revealed as a man tells Wonka: ‘Many people have come here to sell chocolate. They’ve all been crushed by the Chocolate Cartel.

‘You can’t get a shop without selling chocolate and you can’t sell chocolate without a shop.’

It is obvious that Wonka lives in a world lacking of pure imagination as a police officer tells him that daydreaming is not allowed in the public streets.

When home and accompanied by Lane’s character inspiration strikes Wonka as a lightbulb lights up over his head as the two begin their journey of making chocolate and taking on the Chocolate Cartel.

Many scenes are shown including Wonka’s chocolate making the bosses of the Chocolate Cartel float as he is tasked with changing the lives of those around him including Lane’s character.

He is told: ‘Every good thing in this world started with a dream so hold onto yours.’

Wonka’s mother – played by Sally Hawkins –  is shown in a crowd blowing a kiss toward him as he whispers to himself: ‘Here we go mama.’

Many joyous scenes are then shown with Wonka boldly declaring: ‘Mark my words. This is going to be the greatest chocolate shop the world has ever seen.’

The film is being directed by Paul King, who previously helmed the critically-acclaimed Paddington in 2014, and its sequel in 2017.

So many stars! Wonka boasts a huge star-studded cast, including Hugh Grant, who takes on the role of an Oompa Loompa
