On May 14, celebs joined rallies in New York, Los Angeles and beyond in support of Americans’ constitutional right to a safe and legal abortion, as outlined in the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade. The “Bans Off Our Bodies” protests were organized amid concern over a leaked draft opinion showing the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe if it’s approved, allowing states to determine reproductive rights. As of mid-May, about half of the 50 states have legislation that would ban or severely restrict abortion should Roe be overturned. Organized by Planned Parenthood, NARAL, SEIU and more women’s rights groups, the rallies drew stars like Christy Turlington and Padma Lakshmi in Los Angeles and Cyndi Lauper in New York City.
