Former This Morning host Phillip Schofield has made a heartfelt apology to his co-star Holly Willoughby as he candidly admitted how much he regrets lying to his friend of 14 years about an affair he had with a younger This Morning staff member.
The news first broke last week that Phil had engaged in an affair with a much younger staff member who worked as a runner on the ITV morning show, something which is said to have blindsided co-star Holly, who had been unaware of the relationship.
However, due to her close friendship with Phil, many members of the public have been quick to wrongly presume that she knew about the affair and had helped Phil to conceal it, something which he confirmed in an interview with The Sun, is incorrect.
He told the publication: “I’ve lost my best friend. I let her down (Holly). I let that entire show down. I let the viewers down.
“Holly did not know (about the romance). And she was one of the first texts that I sent, to say, ‘I am so, so sorry that I lied to you’.
“She didn’t reply and I understand why she didn’t reply, as well. So yeah. If anyone is in any way linking Holly to this; that is absolutely, wholly untrue.”
In the same interview, Phil also revealed that he and Holly are now no longer speaking, with the final nail in their friendship having come when Timothy, Phil’s brother, was convicted for multiple child sex offences last month.
Despite claims to the contrary in the press, Phil did confirm he had “no feud” with Holly, and even referred to her as his “TV sister” before the fallout from his affair became public.
As a result of the affair, Phil has been axed from network ITV, dropped by his agent, and lost a number of highly lucrative brand deals.
ITV have also had to bear the brunt of the fallout themselves too, with ITV boss Carol McCall now summoned to speak at Parliament on June 14th to address concerns over the lack of safeguarding procedures in place at the network and answer questions on their complaint-handling following Phillip’s resignation.
The Chief Executive will face a grilling from MP’s on the Culture, Media and Sport committee at 10am on the 14th.
