Princess Diana’s friends say she would be ‘horrified’ by her portrayal in film Spencer, say friends

Princess Diana's friends have said they think she would be "horrified" to see the way she is being portrayed now.

The comments have come days before the release of the biopic Spencer, in which Hollywood star Kristen Stewart plays the role of the late royal.

The film centres on one tumultuous weekend in Diana's life in 1991 when she and Prince Charles were plagued by rumours that their marriage was at breaking point while attempting to enjoy the Christmas festivities at the famous Sandringham Estate.

And magazine editor Ingrid Seward has criticised the portrayal of her close friend Diana, as she explained: "It hadn't been a good year for Charles and Diana at all, their marriage was breaking up pretty rapidly."

Ingrid took further offence at the film Spencer depicting scenes of Diana battling bulimia and self-harm, saying that she wasn't "cutting herself" during that particular weekend.

"That Christmas, she was there with Fergie… she wasn't speaking to Charles, but she wasn't cutting herself at that stage. They've piled every bad thing into one weekend which is taking poetic licence a little far," she added to The Telegraph.

She added that Princess Diana would not have wanted to be viewed as someone pitted against the monarchy as it was "her sons' future so she would never try to destroy it".

Ingrid explained that Diana "never saw herself as a victim" – instead, she viewed herself as a "single woman before the end of her marriage".

Another friend of Diana's, make-up artist Mary Greenwell, added that the current portrayals of Diana "are not the best way to understand her".

This comes after American actress Kristen opened up about playing Princess Diana in the upcoming biopic Spencer, admitting it's "one of the saddest stories to exist ever".

The 31-year-old former Twilight star told In Style Magazine: "It's one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don't want to just play Diana — I want to know her implicitly."

She continued to the publication: "I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long."

Kristen, who audiences will see transform into the Princess of Wales when Spencer is released in November, continued to explain how she prepared for the role of a lifetime.

Her thorough research included reading biographies cover to cover, as well as listening to recordings of Diana's voice each night so that she could perfect her accent.

Spencer is in cinemas from November 5th
