Thandiwe Newton has left the cast of Channing Tatum’s new Magic Mike sequel and is being replaced by Salma Hayek—and it looks like reports of tension between Thandiwe and Channing being the reason for her departure are fully untrue.
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. issued a statement to Variety explaining that “Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters.”
A spokesperson for Thandiwe then told The Daily Mail that the reports of tension are “completely inaccurate.”
Both statements comes amid claims from The Sun (via Page Six) that Thandiwe departed the film after getting into an argument on set with Channing about Will Smith’s Oscars slap, which according to a witness reached “astonishing” levels. A source said “They fell out over the debacle at the Oscars. I was on set. I watched her and watched him. They were in and out of the house where we were filming having this confrontation…. After the row he just went, ‘I am not working with her anymore.’ Him being a producer, it’s his movie, so she’s off the movie.”
Neither Channing or Thandiwe have spoken directly about Thandiwe’s departure or false reports of drama between them at this point.
