Rihanna recently announced that she will star as Smurfette in an upcoming animated Smurfs movie from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies.
Rihanna said she will also write and perform original music for the film in addition to her voice role.
“I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out,” she joked on stage at CinemaCon, where she made the announcement about her role.
“Getting to do animation is a fun journey for me,” Rihanna said, according to IndieWire. “I’m usually front and center with everything with my likeness… but this was fun, I got to imagine, I got to show up in my pajamas in my third trimester, and be a blue badass.”
Paramount Animation head Ramsey Naito said the film will explore themes of identity and ask the central question, “What is a Smurf?”
The movie, not titled as yet, is scheduled to arrive on February 14, 2025. Chris Miller is directing the movie, which is based on Belgian artist Peyo’s comic books. Matt Landon is the co-director and Pam Brady is the script writer.
Rihanna, Jay Brown, Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith, and Ryan Harris are co-producing the movie.
