Sophie Ellis-Bextor on mum guilt after son moved in with her mother

Sophie Ellis-Bextor admitted she does not suffer from mum guilt.

The mother of five spoke candidly about the family’s new living arrangement and also addressed her music career at 44.

The singer admitted that after years of working relentlessly hard to have a successful career she has finally given herself permission to enjoy it and not worry about the times she was absent from home.

Earlier this month, the pop star revealed her 19-year-old son had left the family home and moved in with her mother Janet Ellis, 68.

Sophie fell pregnant with Sonny just six weeks after she started dating musician husband Richard Jones, 44.

She told Mail Online: “Like for every working parent, it is a bit of an ongoing thing, I don’t think you ever have it totally nailed, happily for me I love family life, I love my job and I have really good support where I need it for both things.

“But the hardest part of my job is when I have to be away from them for long periods… the big picture is I really love what I do, and I have worked quite hard to do what I do, I might as well not waste it feeling guilty.”

The Murder On The Dancefloor hitmaker said she wants her children to admire her work ethic and drive even in those times of absence.

“Even at the age of 44 I am still giving myself permission to do the thing I love because it does mean that there are certain times where I can’t be everywhere for my children, but I am a better mum for doing what I do, and I involve my kids quite a lot,” Sophie added.

Sophie met her husband, a bassist who went onto front The Feeling, in 2002 and six weeks later, the singer found out she was pregnant with their first son, Sonny.

The couple are also parents to Kit, 14, Ray, ten, Jesse, eight, and their youngest, Mickey, four.

Addressing her son’s move, she told This Morning hosts Rochelle Humes and Craig Doyle: “My oldest son is 19 now and he’s just moved out to live with my mum 10 minutes away, it’s quite wholesome!

“I have five boys but I don’t have five of the same person – some of them love music and others don’t. I have one still at home who never wants to come to any of my gigs. But the majority of them like music actually.”

She added: “Five of anything is a lot. I love the chaos of big family life luckily. There are always things happening. One is running, another has brought four friends over. It’s a good antidote to the darkness sometimes.

“They never ask ‘how did your gig go?’ They just tell me about their day and I like that.”

During the interview on This Morning Sophie also said that, although she has no immediate plans on baby number six, she struggles with drawing a line under having more children.
