Strictly’s Amy Dowden shares ‘life-threatening’ setback amid breast cancer treatment

Strictly star Amy Dowden has suffered a terrifying 'life-threatening' setback to her breast cancer treatment which left her needing care in an Intensive Care Unit.

Amy, 33, has been praised for how open she has been with her cancer treatment so far with many viewing her as an inspiration to others who suffer from the terrible disease.

But in her latest interview, Amy revealed that she has suffered quite the setback this month as she contracted a difficult Sepsis infection which could have been 'life-threatening' if left untreated.

Following her first round of chemotherapy, Amy noticed that she was getting a temperature of 37.5 and she started feeling sick, but she initially thought nothing of it.

The dancing star did not realise at the time that these symptoms could be "fatal" to a patient undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

"I just thought it was my reaction to chemo, but as it turned out, I had already got an infection," she told Hello.

Straight after her first round of chemo, Amy commented on how good she was feeling as she gave Strictly bosses updates in heartfelt video messages.

However, her condition soon began to worsen following the first round which left her with the horrible infection.

Amy's parents were advised to call an ambulance and get her to hospital but Amy did not actually think things were that bad and resisted the calls to get to hospital.

She said: "I didn’t want to go into hospital; at the time I didn’t realise how ill I was."

But she was eventually forced into Walsall Manor Hospital, and was treated for Sepsis on an antibiotic drip.

Doctors latterly found that she had contracted the infection before going in for her chemotherapy but they are still none the wiser how or why she got the infection.

She said: "The doctors and nurses were telling me I had sepsis and that it was life-threatening, but I wasn’t taking it in."

Taking to Instagram about her ordeal, Amy shared with her fans: "I recently suffered a setback in my cancer treatment and spent several days in hospital and needing care by an ICU team."

In response, many fans flocked to the comments of the post to share their love for the Strictly star.

One person stated: "The strongest I know. Endless love and positivity sent your way beautiful."

While another added: "Lots of love. Chemo and its treatment is scary and tough and often has lots of complications sadly. Really glad you got in hospital in time.

"Really shows how important not leaving a temperature is on chemo as can be really serious. Hope round 2 wasn’t as bad. Lots of love."
