TALK OF THE TOWN: Blur frontman Damon Albarn, 53, proves nice neighbours aren’t everything as he splashed £1million on copycat home renovations that he barely uses

It doesn’t always pay to keep up with the Joneses – just ask Damon Albarn.

The Blur singer says FOMO (fear of missing out) made him copy the neighbours and splash an estimated £1million on a basement extension at his £6million Notting Hill home – yet he’s barely set foot in it.

‘Everybody else was doing it and I thought, “Well, if I don’t, then the value of the house…”’ he says. 

‘But I don’t use it. 

‘They dig your house out and put it on stilts. Why did I do it? What an idiot.’ 

It’s difficult for couples to find a fitting wedding song, but U2 frontman Bono is forever puzzled over why the band’s One is so popular – because it’s filled with rancour. 

The lyrics include lines such as, ‘We’re one, but we’re not the same. Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again’.

The Irish star, 61, who wrote One in 1991, says: ‘I can’t figure why people play it at their wedding… there’s so much bitterness and acrimony.

‘It takes a courageous couple to walk down the aisle with that on.’

I know some supermarket cashiers can be overzealous but actress Suranne Jones thought it was strange to be asked to prove her age before she was able to buy… a jar of cherries. 

The Gentleman Jack star, 43, admitted she was flattered when she seemed to be mistaken for someone under-age while trying to put the kirsch-soaked fruit through the till – and even posted a picture of herself pondering the encounter.

Turns out it was Suranne who was confused. 

After checking her receipt an hour later, she remembered she had also bought her mother-in-law some gin – and realised that was why she was ID-checked!
