Gwyneth Paltrow Couldn't Find the Right On-the-Go Hair Treatment — So She Created One Herself

While the pandemic has caused many of us to spend more time at home, somehow it seems like life is now busier than ever.

Between Zoom calls, managing an onslaught of emails, figuring out what to make for dinner, disinfecting everything, and, you know, planning for the rapture, sometimes haircare can take a backseat. That's why goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow wanted to create a treatment that could work to nourish the hair while you exercised — or get anything else around the house done.

"I like to work out in the morning, and workouts give a lot of wear and tear to the hair. So I thought, 'God, wouldn't it be great to have a serum — an oil-based serum — that you could put in the hair to protect it, and let it nourish the hair while you work out?'" she shares exclusively with InStyle. "Although I use it while sitting [outside] or returning emails or whatever."

And that's how goop's latest launch: GOOPGLOW Restore + Shine Hair Serum was born.

Designed to be used on dry hair 20 minutes before shampooing, the formula — which contains a blend of plumeria monoi, coconut, castor seed, and sunflower seed oils — helps to revive damaged hair overtime and add megawatt shine.

"The plumeria monoi oil in particular moisturizes, conditions, and leaves hair super shiny," says Jaimee Holmes, vice president of beauty and wellness at goop. "And the combination of ingredients is designed to smooth frizz, moisturize, and help detangle for the ultimate hair glow-up."

Paltrow says that while the product has made a world of difference to her color-treated hair, it has also been tested on those with textured, super curly, and graying strands as well — and it's worked wonders, too, she says.

"It's really, honestly good for all hair types," the Golden Globe winner shares. "This happens with some of us women when we get to the other side of 35, your hormones start to change, and the texture will change in your hair, which is kind of a bad surprise. It makes my hair so soft and less frizzy throughout the week, so I stopped using other hair treatments."

But obviously, I still had to put it to the test myself.

When I received the product, my naturally curly hair was blown-out. However, I did find that by mid-week, my hair needed a bit of a refresher. So I added a few drops of the serum to my hand, warmed it up between my palms and finger-combed it through my hair.

For me, the product added extra shine and my hair instantly felt softer, but what I most enjoyed about the product is that it didn't leave behind that weighed-down or clammy feeling I get from a traditional oil. My hair also absorbed it immediately, so I could lay down on my satin pillow without worrying about leaving an oil slick behind.

Another plus? If you want to add a generous amount before wash day, you can leave it in and actually go on about your life until you're ready to shampoo or co-wash — no shower cap required.

"I really needed something that worked with my hair and not kind of go everywhere," says Paltrow. "For a while I tried using leave-in conditioner while I worked out, and it ended up running down my face [laughs]."

Been there before, too — luckily, we won't have to go back.
