HAVING a dog is one of the most rewarding things you can do in life, but it’s not all fun and games like many might believe. 

Our furry friends often come with an excitable nature, leading them to jump up at people, run off to follow a scent or even chase after cars. 

And it’s the last one on that list that can be especially dangerous. 

If the dog isn’t on the lead and isn’t taught the correct way to behave around vehicles, then they could get seriously hurt.

Now, a dog trainer has shared how to stop this behaviour and the one mistake owners tend to make to enable it. 

Garret Wing started the short clip off by standing by the side of a road while holding a red lead attached to what appeared to be a Rottweiler.

“What we’re trying to eliminate is… Mr. Apollo here has a horrible behaviour of chasing after cars,” he explained to viewers. 

The scene then cut to his furry companion trying to launch himself at a passing car before being tugged back. 

“Like it’s so bad that he’s going to get hit by a car if he keeps doing it,” he continued. “So we’re going to solve it right here, right now.” 

The camera then zoomed out to show a grey car slowly driving past as Garret leaned back to tug the dog with him.

He then explained that they were “already doing much better” as the black and tan dog sat calmly by the road as a car drove by. 

“But when we hand the keys over to Josh, he needs to know Josh is in charge,” he went on. “I’ve been giving him (the dog) a job to do and that’s to be on his best behaviour.” 

Handing the leash back to Josh, Mr. Apollo’s owner, they watched as another car went by. When the dog didn’t react, Josh reached down to pet him to “let him know he’s a good boy”. 

Garret, known as @AmericanStandardK9 on YouTube, then shared the mistakes most people make as he shared: “Now what a lot of people do wrong is when the dog is at their most stressed, they’re loading and they’re about to lunge – they say, ‘It’s okay, good boy, calm down,’ but what you’re actually saying is, ‘Good boy, go kill that garbage truck, go kill that car’. 

“No, we’re not saying that.” 

People were quick to comment, with one person pointing out that Garret was training NBA player Josh Hart’s dog in the video. 

Others, meanwhile, were left impressed with his tactics as one person shared: “Yup , fostered a dog that did this. Corrected him numerous times, he tenses up but doesn’t lunge anymore.”

Another said: “I need to hire this guy”. 

As a third added: “Trying this first thing in the morning with our 3 dogs one at a time thanks!”
