I'm a mum-of-16 and we beat the cost-of-living crisis by buying a COW to butcher ourselves – trolls think it's grim | The Sun

A COUPLE have revealed that to battle the cost of living crisis, instead of buying their meat from a supermarket like many families do, they instead bought an entire cow and butchered it themselves.

Tim and Kelly Green share 16 children, some of which are biological and some who are adopted.

But after meat prices skyrocketed as a result of inflation and the cost-of-living crisis and the pair began feeling fed up, the duo decided to buy and butcher an entire cow to save money on their food shopping.

On an episode or Dr. Phil shared on YouTube, the parents-of-16 opened up about their decision to buy the animal.

Kelly said: “Buying meat these days can get pricey, so we decided to purchase a cow and have it butchered.

“It filled the majority of our stand-up freezer, which is now full of hamburgers, t-bone steaks, rib eyes, roasts and cube steaks.

“Three layers of nothing but meat.

"We filled it so much that we had to adjust it to get it to close, but we managed to make it work.”

Tim then explained: “It got to the point where your typical hamburger meat was about $6/7 a lb and I would say probably half of the meals that we cook are ground beef, so that’s a big filler for our family.

“A normal meal for a family of four would be a one lb pack of hamburger meat, but for us, it’s about four lbs, so it can add up quickly.”

Kelly then chimed in and explained that to save extra money, the family have been planning their meals in advance and have been buying their food in bulk.

The mother noted: “We started making homemade biscuits and things like sugar, that you need on a daily basis, in bulk as well.”

The Dr Phil episode has clearly stunned many, as it has quickly amassed 7,789 views and 197 comments.

YouTube users took to the comments to share their thoughts on the family’s money-saving idea.

Many people revealed that their family have also done the same thing.

One user said: “Our family did the same thing plus chickens & we are still glad we did. I think this family was smart to do this. They were thinking about their family.”

A second added: “We do it too! Usually a half cow.”

A third commented: “Lol that’s what my family has been doing for generations.”

However, many others weren’t keen on the idea, or on the thought of eating meat.
