Man on how he heats his house 24/7 but his bill's less than his mate, who's in the same size home AND turns his off | The Sun

A MAN has explained how he managed to keep his heating on 24/7, but still pays less than his mate who turns his on and off.

Kamran said he's figured out how to make his heating system more effective, and it makes his house even warmer than his pal's.

"Tip on using heating cost effectively," he wrote in a post on the Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas Facebook group.

"Set your heating thermostat to desired room temp and when house is warm, reduce heater temp to low to retain and maintain heat but do not turn off heating but leave it 24/7."

Meanwhile, his friend who has the same size house as him turns his heating off, before turning it on again when his home gets cold.

"His gas bill is much higher than mine," he concluded.

And people were quick to weigh in on the post, with many of them agreeing with Kamran.

"We have ours set to 19.5 degrees and it cost £2.50 a day," one wrote.

"If we leave the house to go cold and then heat it up, it costs almost £5 a day.

"Depends on your boiler and its efficiency. Ours certainly is cheaper to leave it on!"

"To heat from cold the first hour or so is a much higher cost," another added.

"Maintaining a steady heat requires less for a lot of homes. It depends on your home though.

"Mine is around a third of the cost on constantly than on and off."

As a third commented: "

If your heating is off during the day and your temperature drops to 16 degrees, to get your house to a cosy 20 degrees when you get home will take roughly 30 mins and then your heating is on until bedtime.

"If you keep it a low temperature, say 18 degrees depending on how insulated your house is, your heating might only pop on for 5 mins to warm the house every couple of hours.

"So instead of burning 30 mins of gas to heat your home after work, you have only burnt 15 mins of gas during the day and the house has been kept warm and damp free.

"Obviously this only works if you have a min max thermostat."

As someone else wrote: "I am with Octopus energy and I tried leaving it on low as I normally turn on and off and it was £100 cheaper by turning it off then leaving it on low a month and now I’m £800 in credit."

Meanwhile, others insisted the approach doesn't work for them and their household bills.

"It isn't true, using the heating when needed is going to be cheaper than having it on all day," one insisted.

"I tried this with my LPG gas they was filling the tank up every 6 weeks at nearly 700 a time," another said.

"Ended up running a bill up for 4k!

"Don't try it on lpg gas!!"

As a third commented: "This seems to completely contradict all the expert advice being given out.

"I haven't put the heating on yet….. nor used any other heaters!"

"Mine's not been on yet, cheapest way," someone else smugly said.
