Sun man reveals how YOU can get fit without breaking a sweat by pottering about

THERE has been great news for fans of pottering, like myself.

A report claimed doing just half an hour of light exercise a day cuts your risk of early death by nearly a fifth.

It said any exercise, no matter how light, is good for you. Even one minute of it.

To the untrained eye, it appears I spend a lot of time at home doing not very much.

It gets very intense at the weekend, when I slow it down even more. My wife gets increasingly irritated as I shuffle about, pausing to gaze into the middle distance.

The fitness fad of the moment is High Intensity Interval Training, by the likes of Joe Wicks. But here is my Low Intensity Interval Workout for people who want to take easy – the Slow Wicks plan . . .

OILING A SQUEAKY DOOR HINGE

Low-level lubrication is a very quick win. When time is short and you need a quick workout, go for this.

Grab some oil, or ideally silicon spray, and kill that squeak.

Time: 2 minutes.

Average Heart Rate: 70 beats per min.

Calories: 7.

PRUNING IN THE GARDEN

Only start this if you have plenty of time.

Tell your family you may be gone for a while.

Grab a pair of secateurs and some gloves and really lose yourself in a deep prune. Remember to replace those fluids with cups of tea.

Time: 2 hours.

Average Heart Rate: 85 beats per min.

Calories: 686.

TINKERING IN THE SHED

The shed is my version of the gym. This is where you keep all the key equipment for your workout – tools, brushes, oil, grease and gardening equipment.

Vary the workout by picking up different items before placing them back down elsewhere.

Time: 60 minutes.

Average Heart Rate: 90 beats per min.

Calories: 388.

FIXING MODEL AIRCRAFT

A good way to introduce your kids to this healthy lifestyle.

Classic Airfix is too messy. Now you can go for their easier Quick Fix collection, which looks like you have made a lot more effort than you actually have.

No glue or paint required.

Time: 45 minutes.

Average Heart Rate: 65 beats per min.

Calories: 121.

AMBLING TO THE SHOPS

Going to fetch a copy of The Sun and a pint of milk is a classic exercise that is the perfect start to the day.

The trick is not to walk too fast to make sure you maximise your time out of the house.

Time: 15 minutes.

Average Heart Rate: 112 beats per min.

Calories: 147.

GETTING SOMETHING FROM THE LOFT

For more vigorous exercise, try to think of something you are sure you put in the loft a few years ago.

It could be a box of old CDs or a family photo.

It can get pretty hectic climbing up the ladder and shifting boxes around. You will need a rest afterwards.

Time: 20 minutes.

Average Heart Rate: 120 beats per min.

Calories: 220.

Time: 15 minutes.

Calories: 120.
