The 10 words that should never pass your lips if you want to avoid sounding tacky – but how many are you guilty of? | The Sun

AN ELEGANCE expert has shared the 10 words you should avoid saying if you don't want to sound cheap, tacky and dumb.

But it's safe to say we're all guilty of at least a few of them – so how many do you say?

Vivienne Abena explained why she thinks the names are so bad, and it's all to do with how other people view you.

"Your choice of words when expressing yourself reveals a lot about who you are.

"Your manner of speaking can endear you to others or make them avoid you," she explained.

"Some of these words and phrases can make you sound moronic, uncultured, or un intelligent," she added.

'Like', 'Basically' and 'Literally'

Most people end up using the words 'like' and 'basically' to fill gaps in their sentences.

But it can become pretty annoying, at least for Vivienne, who can't stand when people use them repeatedly.

"Most of the time when overused, they sound meaningless and out of context," she said.

Another word people tend to overuse, and use totally wrong, is 'literally'.

According to the elegance pro, you end up sounding stupid if you use it wrong reputedly, which can give people a bad impression.

'Innit'

Although using this word once or twice probably isn't too bad, saying it repeatedly.

Vivienne explained that people who use it a lot can come across as patronising and and leave people "on edge and uncomfortable."

'Chicks'

Referring to women as 'chick's might sound cool to some people, but it the elegance pro thinks otherwise.

"Doesn't it sound demining and sexist? Some women may not mind these terms but others think it's highly offensive."

'The maths is not mathing'

This is only of the less common terms you should avoid, but if you haven't head of it before it's a good thing, Vivienne said.

The phrase is used when something doesn't make sense, and even though it's mostly used for "banter" it can "make you sound quite ignorant."

'You guys'

Not everyone loves being referred to like this, Vivienne notes.

She said the problem is it takes away people's individuality and can sound disrespectful if used at the wrong time.

'Chill'

No matter how you use it, the word 'chill' is a big no-no as far as the elegance expert is concerned.

Even if you only say it around your friends, it can creep into your everyday use and you can say it to your boss – which might not go down so well.

'Oi'

This word should be ditched from your language because it comes across as rude and tacky.

Unless you're trying to "catch a burglar in action" this word shouldn't be used, the pro said.

'Yeah'

It might be alright to say 'yeah' here or there, but if you find yourself repeating it when someone else is talking you should think twice, Vivienne said.

"It waters down the importance of your words and is very boring really," she added.

'OMG'

"Using this phrase in a conversation reeks of teenage-ish exuberance and it's too juvenile for a classy lady to repeatedly express her amazement or surprise in that manner," the pro said.
