21 September -On This Day : 56 years since Queen Elizabeth II launched her QE2

We described the “agonising” 70-second delay before the launch of the new QE2 cruise liner at John Brown’s shipyard in Clydebank, Glasgow, noting that even the Queen looked anxious after she pressed the release button on the launch gear.

The 53,000-tonne cruise ship would remain the flagship of the Cunard Line until she was succeeded by the Queen Mary 2 in 2004.

44 years ago (1979)

Two Harrier jump jets collided at 8,000 feet above the town of Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, killing two men and a young boy.

One crashed into a field but debris from the other fell onto two houses and
a bungalow.

An inquiry found the pilots were engaged in a mock dogfight at the time of the collision.

Somalian terrorists attacked the upmarket Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing 67.

The al-Shabaab jihadists claimed the massacre was in revenge for the Kenyan Government’s military involvement in their country.

The atrocity followed UN warnings about the potential for an attack.
