Airbnb has rounded up the top seaside destinations in the UK – and Sandgate, Kent, took the top spot.

To get the result, researchers took into consideration coastlines that are trending.

The top spot was awarded to the spot with the highest year-on-year growth.

And Airbnb users have been loving Sandgate, a small village in Folkestone, which has a popular beach, restaurants and other attractions.

Leader of Sandgate Parish Council, Tim Prater, said: "Our award winning beach has held the Seaside Award for eight years running and we've got both long established and new places to eat and drink.”

Other coastal locations that made the list include Ingoldmells and Sandilands, which are both in Lincolnshire.

Seaburn in County Durham also proved to be a hotspot for tourists.

Meanwhile, Somerset destinations Portishead and Watchet were also highly commended.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb said: "This past year has seen a real resurgence of the great British seaside holiday.

"And it’s not just the familiar summer stalwarts that are feeling the love; this hotlist shows that Brits are exploring lesser-known destinations and favouring well-loved gems as a means of escape this summer."
