A carpenter who carved an X-rated man in the rafters of a church ceiling has finally been caught out – just a hundreds of years later.

The work was reportedly hidden from view in the darkness of the roof at the 800-year-old All Saints Church in Hereford.

But when a gallery was constructed to build a new cafe, light was shown on the ark work, which exposed the naked man posing.

Now the image has gone viral on Reddit, with the post racking up 140,000 upvotes and 2,400 comments.

The caption revealed the skilful carpenter carved the gentleman high up where nobody could see him.

It added: "Five years ago they built an extra floor with bright lights for a restaurant."

After the cafe was built, Birmingham Live reported the nude man, known as Seamus O'Tool, had been carved in the 15th century.

It was exposed by a spotlight during the cafe works where the vicar at the time wanted to monetise the find by creating postcards.

But the idea was halted by the congregation over "pushing back the bounds of decency too far".

The post on Reddit proved popular with thousands of users rushing to comment on the cheeky picture.

One wrote: "I just picture him on his deathbed, still giggling and wondering if anyone will ever find out."

Another added: "Even at the risk of getting burned alive if ever caught. Worth it."

A third praised: "Words can't describe how much I love this."

While a fourth joked: "A good carpenter knows his wood…"
