A dentist described one of the most ageing features of teeth, one that most Britons will experience at some point in their life. Dr. Sam Jethwa explained all.
He told Express.co.uk: “When you get older your teeth have done a lot more work so it stands to reason that they start to become more worn down.”
Worn-down teeth certainly appear more ageing. All teeth will become worn down in one way or another, from wear and tear throughout your life. But, some issues can exacerbate this. Grinding teeth is one serious way teeth become worn down with time.
Wear in the form of erosion can also cause the issue, and this is caused often by acids including stomach acid or acidic foods like fizzy drinks. Hard brushing, or biting hard objects can also cause teeth to wear down.
The dentist adds that bite problems can also cause the issue. He said: “I find that people have worn down their teeth because of a bite problem or because of previous dentistry which changes their bite.”
“This causes them to chew differently and wear their front teeth down that then exposes the inside layers of the teeth and requires treatment to fix it but also creates an aesthetic problem and causes teeth to look older.”
How to know if you have a healthy bite
A healthy bite is when your upper teeth fit slightly over the lower teeth and your molars fit together.
If your bite doesn’t feel like this, you should see your dentist.
Signs of a bad bite include your tongue being cut or nicked by your teeth.

Signs of worn-down teeth
How can you know if you have worn down teeth? The first thing to look for is a change in the appearance of the teeth.
This can include chips missing from teeth, the shape of the tooth changing or teeth looking translucent. Other symptoms indicating worn-down teeth include increased sensitivity and a loss of enamel.
If you have worn-down teeth, Dr. Sami suggested a solution. He said: “The perfect way to address worn-down teeth is with ultra-thin veneers.
“These can be applied in a matter of minutes, they’re colour matched perfectly to the rest of your teeth and not only help to make teeth look younger but also prevent the inside layers of teeth being exposed to bacteria and decay.”
The dentist touched on another dental issue that can age Britons prematurely.
He explained Britons should watch out for receding gums and said: “Receding gums (also known as long teeth) are most common in adults over 40 and as a result, they’re something that is often regarded as looking very ageing.”
There are a number of symptoms of receding gums to look out for including bleeding after brushing, gum pain, exposed tooth roots and bad breath.
