The scraggly blue muppet from the children’s classic Sesame Street is instantly recognizable, but did you know that Cookie Monster’s favorite treats are real?

Puppet Wrangler Lara MacLean joined the Sesame Workshop, an American nonprofit responsible for producing the educational children’s program in 1992, and has baked Cookie Monster’s snacks in her New York home for years.

According to The New York Times, she started as an intern and has been there ever since not left since, crafting the infamous cookies from her own home because the ovens at Sesame Workshop are too small for her batches.

She came up with the recipe herself in 2000 after the hit television show’s creative team struggled to perfect the Cookie Monster’s treats themselves.

It turned out that their rice crackers and foam just didn’t cut it – they either got stuck in Cookie’s fur or didn’t look the part.

Lara uses pancake mix, instant coffee, water, puffed rice, and Grape-Nuts for her batch.

And the chocolate chips are actually lumps of colored glue. She refrains from adding oils, fats and sugars, so as not to stain the puppet’s fur.

Lara told The New York Times the confections are barely edible – and described them as ‘kind of like a dog treat’.

She jokingly explained that she once made a huge batch shortly before her landlord visited and told him: ‘”I’m really sorry, I can’t offer you a cookie”. He probably just thought I was really mean!’

Cookie Monster has been portrayed by David Rudman since 2001.

According to him, super soft batches are the best because they lead to more crumbs, and more fun – perfect for Cookie who’s known for getting bits and pieces stuck into his blue fur.

And despite his name, Cookie does not just eat cookies. His diet now extends to fruits and veg, and he has even been seen  gobbling inanimate objects like mailboxes.
