The former Countryfile host, 50, said it has become the norm to see them dumped when visiting parks. She said: “Masks are being chucked away in the street and in beauty spots.

“Go anywhere and within minutes I bet you’ll see one in a hedge or on the ground.

“Even some of the most stunning and dramatic vistas in this country seem to be affected by these tiny blots on the landscape.

“This is such a shame. For some, I suspect the series of lockdowns might have been the first time they’ve been able to appreciate the natural world.”

Writing in Radio Times, she added: “They’re potentially deadly to wildlife, and vets have reported a rise in cases of mask ingestion by dogs. So, it’s time we dealt with this as an issue.”
