Prince William and Kate Middleton aren’t shy of celebrating Valentine’s Day, but they haven’t always spent it together.
Back in 2012, the newlyweds (who married in April the previous year) had to endure the occasion 7,500 miles apart!
William was in the Falklands on duty, while Kate took on a royal engagement in Liverpool. But distance meant little to the romantic royals, who decided to make the day cuter and more special than ever.
From saucy undies to floods of fan gifts and classic flowers, we’ve uncovered how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed close on Valentine’s Day despite being so very far apart…
Kate’s cute card
The Duchess spent Valentine’s Day 2012 on a charity visit to the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
While on her solo duties, a little boy called Jaqson sweetly told Kate how sorry he was that William was away from her on Valentine’s Day.
Kate asked him: “Do you know where he is? He’s in the Falklands but he’s sent me a card this morning.”
Jaqson’s mum, who stood close by, later shared more of their intimate chat. Apparently the Duchess told her she’d been gifted a big bouquet of flowers from the prince, too – aww!
Fresh undies for William
Thought underwear was exclusively for women on Valentine’s Day? Think again!
Back in 2012 Kate bought her husband of ten months a very unconventional gift.
While she enjoyed a sweet card and scented flowers, William unwrapped a pair of pants!
The Duchess decided against a soppy present and instead shipped her husband a pair of Ralph Lauren boxer shorts.
According to the Sun, Kate spent £25 on the Polo Ralph Lauren Pouch Trunks. They were purchased at the John Lewis Peter Jones store in West London – very swish.
A staff member at the store told the newspaper: “Kate knew what she wanted when she came in and went for the boxed trunks that give a very nice fit.”
They added: “The shorts are very popular and very trendy.”
Kate’s fan club
Remember sweet little Jaqson? The eight-year-old went as far as to give the Duchess a Valentine’s card, a cute cupcake and a bouquet of roses!
