‘I’m 50 and I feel better than I did at 40’: Functional medicine expert lifts the lid on the five things she will NEVER tell patients since she stopped practicing conventional medicine
- Efrat LaMandre is a family nurse practitioner with a Ph.D. in integrative medicine
- As a functional medicine provider, she focuses on the root cause of disease
- She went viral on TikTok after sharing things she no longer tells her patients
A functional medicine provider has lifted the lid on the five things that she would never tell her patients now that she no longer practices conventional medicine.
Efrat LaMandre, 51, from New York, worked as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for years before getting her Ph.D. in integrative medicine, a form of treatment that focuses on the patient as a whole.
The Knew Method founder recently went viral on TikTok after sharing some of the practices she has abandoned since she shifted her focus to addressing the root cause of disease.
‘Now full disclosure, I used to practice conventional medicine, and I used to be guilty of these five things — but not anymore,’ she explained.

‘So to my colleagues, I say it’s never too late to evolve.’
LaMandre began by saying she would never tell her patients their thyroid is ‘normal’ based on the results of a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test.
The test measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone in the blood.
TSH levels that are too high or low may indicate a thyroid problem; however, some people with hypothyroidism have normal lab results.
‘Make sure you ask for antibodies, your T4, your T3, the entire thyroid panel to really know what’s going on,’ she advised.
LaMandre went on to say that she would never tell a patient who had achy joints or muscles that ‘it’s just your age.’
‘I’m 50 and I feel better than I did when I was 40 and when I was 30,’ she insisted.
‘That’s because we now know that aches and pains mean something, and it usually means inflammation that hasn’t been treated. So don’t accept that as an answer.’

LaMandre went on to say that she would never chalk up achy joints or brain fog to old age. She would also never tell women with irregular periods to just start taking birth control pills
The functional medicine provider ended her video by stressing that she would never tell someone ‘their symptoms are in their head’ and that there is ‘nothing wrong with them’
She continued to note that she would never tell women with irregular periods to start taking birth control pills to regulate their cycles based on the belief that nothing else can be done.
‘There is so much you can do about it, and, most importantly, you have to get to the root cause of why your periods are irregular instead of just medicating,’ she said.
In the same vein, she would never tell people who are struggling with brain fog or memory issues that it’s part of aging and ‘nothing really to worry about unless it gets really severe.’
‘There is so much you can do around brain fog and around cognitive decline that has to do with diet, anti-inflammation, and something called nootropics,’ she said.
LaMandre advised anyone who doesn’t know what nootropics are ‘to Google it and find out because it’s a big deal.’
Known as ‘smart drugs’ or ‘neuroenhancers,’ nootropics are natural or synthetic substances that claim to increase cognitive function and brain performance.

LaMandre said she felt so strongly about this that she wrote an entire book on the topic, titled ‘It’s NOT in Your Head,’ which was published last year.
‘What I want you to know is your symptoms are real. They mean something. They’re not in your head, and they need to be addressed,’ she concluded.
LaMandre’s video has been viewed more than 400,000 times and has received hundreds of comments since it was posted on May 27.
‘Why aren’t all doctors this way?? Love everything you said,’ one person wrote.
‘Why can’t they all be like you?’ another asked.
‘Heard every one of these. No joke. Celiac and Hashimotos undetected for years!’ someone else shared.
