Prince and Princess of Wales pay subtle tribute to 72 victims of the Grenfell Tower fire on 6th anniversary of the tragedy

The Prince and Princess of Wales posted a subtle tribute to the 72 victims of the Grenfell Tower fire on Twitter on the sixth anniversary of the tragedy.

The fire, which ripped through Grenfell Tower in Kensington in 2017, shocked the nation and led to campaigners calling on the government to rid apartment blocks of flammable cladding.

As the Grenfell community pulled together in a show of support, their grief became synonymous with a green heart.

Posting on Twitter last night, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a single green heart, in a show of solidarity with the victims.

Since the tragedy in 2017, Kate and William have met with the Grenfell community several times – and their sister-in-law Meghan Markle even collaborated with the community kitchen to publish a cookbook.

As the Prince and Princess of Wales left their subtle tribute to the Grenfell victims on social media, many well-wishers also responded with green hearts to send their solidarity to the families who had been affected by the tragedy.

Last month, Prince William met Grenfell survivors and bereaved families ahead of the sixth anniversary of the tower blaze.

He visited Loftus Road, the home of Queens Park Rangers FC, to learn more about how the club supported families of the victims of the fire in the wake of the tragedy.

Grenfell is less than a mile from QPR’s Loftus Road ground in Shepherd’s Bush, West London, and the fire, on June 14 2017 which claimed 72 lives, shocked the nation.

The prince, who is president of the Football Association, also heard from former QPR and England striker Les Ferdinand, chief executive officer of the QPR in the Community Trust, about his organisation’s response to the fire.

William also sat down with community and youth workers funded by the trust who are supporting those affected by the fire in areas like mentoring, mental health and personal development.

They discussed the impact of the fire on their lives, how football has helped, and what the future holds for them almost six years on. 

Last year, William and Kate attended a memorial service marking the fifth anniversary of the fire, organised by Grenfell United at the foot of Grenfell tower.

He also visited along with his grandmother, the late Queen, in the days following the fire in June 2017.

He returned again with Kate when they met with survivors as part of the launch of the National Emergencies Trust in 2019.

Last year Grenfell community members praised Meghan Markle for the work she had done with the community kitchen.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry first visited The Hubb Community Kitchen in 2018 after the fire at the North Kensington tower block claimed the lives of 72 people.

The initiative, long-supported by the Sussexes, was set up to provide support and hot meals for bereaved families in west London following the blaze on June 14, 2017.

Five years on, voluntary staff at the kitchen shared on their page how the Duchess of Sussex had been in touch this week asking about their welfare and sharing news of her own children, Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

They wrote: ‘Today is a day spent looking back, remembering and reflecting. I just found this picture of us all, on the day our cookbook came out.

‘The Duchess had wrapped a book for each one of us and wrote a lovely message to each lady on the first page.’

The comment continued: ‘Always very thoughtful, today we received a lovely voice message from the Duchess, being the 5 years anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, asking how we are, about our children and families and giving us news of hers. Just being her beautiful kind self.’
