M&S’ much-loved Percy Pig sweets have officially gone VEGAN – three years after gelatine was removed to make the entire range vegetarian

Marks and Spencer’s iconic cult sweets Percy Pigs have officially gone vegan.

The pink chews had been a swine for plant-based eaters due to the inclusion of beeswax, also known as E901, in the recipe because strict vegans do not eat honey or products derived from bees as part of their diet.

Bloggers behind the Instagram pages Vegan Food and Vegan Unboxed hinted it was happening last week by showing packs of Percys labelled ‘vegan’ in a video.

Older bags of the tangy sweets were labelled ‘vegetarian’, even flavours that subbed-out the beeswax products like the Phizzy Tails and Phizzy Chews.

But the ‘V’ on packets which used to stand for ‘Vegetarian’ now clearly state it means they are ‘Vegan’.

The popular sweets divided opinion in 2019 when M&S removed pork gelatine from the recipe, rendering all variations of the sweets vegetarian.

‘So they have just introduced in some M&S stores, Vegan Percy Pigs – we thought the day would never come

‘Only in small bags so far…and there is still lots of old stock – Be Warned.’

People rushed to the comments to praise the exciting news with one person saying ‘And we can say with confidence that they taste no different! ❤️’

Another said: ‘This is the happiest day ever!!!!!!!!!! while someone else commented ‘it’s about time!!.’

They were spotted by one shopper in Marks and Spencer in Streatham Hill, South London on Tuesday.

But it is understood they are being sold in M&S stores nationwide.

The customer said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. This is big news. They taste very similar with a slightly softer texture.’

The host lost his cool on Good Morning Britain when he embarked on a passionate rant about the marketing decision, shouting that vegans need to ‘get their own sweets’.

The 57-year-old had viewers in stitches with his dramatic speech – especially since he also confessed he had never actually tried the regular version of the gummy treats.

Piers took part in a taste test, spitting out the fruity sweets and likening it to ‘washing up liquid’, while weather girl Charlotte Tobin confessed she couldn’t actually taste the difference.

But it was the principle of pandering to vegans and vegetarians by rolling out gelatin-free snacks across the board that seemed to irk Piers the most.  

During a debate about changing the rules of Instagram, Piers brought up the Percy Pig dilemma while complaining about ‘Snowflakes’ kicking up a fuss.

He continued: ‘Seriously, go and get sweets that aren’t called Percy Pig.

‘Go and get ones called Kale Nicies which taste disgusting but you can all feel happy because they’re made of kale. Leave our pig sweets alone you people.’  

Susanna asked him: ‘Have you ever eaten a Percy Pig?’

‘No, but I’m about to eat them all the time, the old fashioned gelatin ones. You think they are pigs made of no meat? Utterly ridiculous’, he said.
