Wanting to spice up our marriage, I posted a photo of my wife, Crystal, wearing a bikini, on Reddit in September 2019.
It was really popular, leading to encouragement from users of the site that we should open an OnlyFans account.
OnlyFans is a social media platform that lets users post content and receive payment directly from their followers.
It is primarily a hub for adult content and there are more than 170million registered subscribers worldwide and 1.5million content creators.
We decided to give it a go, with Crystal modelling, producing pictures and content. Within the first month we earned $15,000. It was astounding, we just couldn’t believe it.
Crystal isn’t like many OnlyFans women because she doesn’t do any explicitly pornographic videos.
Her content is more akin to being in Playboy or a sexy social media model. She talks to fans about her day – like a vlog.
Crystal posts sensual pictures and tells stories about her life. She talks about her day and what she’s doing, as well as her career in engineering.
Over the course of more than two years, our account has grown so that now we make between $300,000 and $400,000 a month.
But like many creators, we do worry about those who have access to our content.
It’s why we we welcome the announcement this week from the UK Government, that websites that publish pornography will be legally required to verify the age of their users under new only safety rules.
It is so important that under-18s are prevented from viewing adult content, but it’s hard to see how such measures will be workable.
Crystal and I are engineers by trade so we know the challenges around internet safety and security. Before OnlyFans, I was CEO of a technology company and Crystal was the director of technology for the California Department of Public Health up until not long ago.
The UK Government has said that all sites that publish pornographic content will be required to put ‘robust checks’ in place to ensure users are 18 or over.
Under the proposals, sites can use secure age verification technology to confirm a user possesses a credit card and is therefore at least 18, or use a third-party service to confirm someone’s age against government data.
You usually need a credit card to access OnlyFans paid subscription pages like ours. This means users should – in theory – be at least 18, but that isn’t always the case in practice.
We had a case on our blog where a subscriber used someone’s credit card, whether a friend or older relative we aren’t sure, and ended up revealing that he was under 18.
We reported him to OnlyFans immediately and they kicked him off the page. We didn’t hesitate to notify the company because as adult performers, we simply don’t want underage users.
Adult content is important to regulate, so that there aren’t too many examples like the one above, but you can’t control the entire internet, so even if content is blocked on some sites, there are platforms on the web and on social media where adult content can be viewed by under-18s anyway.
It’s a pretty tall order: Your goal is to keep adult content out of kids’ hands, but children will just go on other websites or social media, where there is as much adult content as they could hope to see.
I don’t know how the new UK restrictions will affect us personally, but we understand the motives of the government.
Our content is not for the eyes of minors and on top of that, privacy is very important to us.
We live in California and the US is a much larger market for us. We’ve even blocked all viewers in the state of California in the past because of privacy reasons. Our children were kicked out of Catholic school after other parents found out we were producing OnlyFans content
So for us, being able to know who is looking at our output is of the utmost importance.
Time will tell how effective the new UK Government plans will be, but until social media platforms like Twitter are more effectively regulated, it’s hard to see how effectively children will be protected from accessing adult content.
